The wind whipped gently at my hair as I stood on the airstrip located somewhere in western Maryland. I saw rolling hills in every direction I looked, the sun meeting my eyes in the east. The skies were clear and birds flew overhead, completely oblivious to the world around him. It was a perfect morning. Sadly, I wouldn’t be able to enjoy it much longer. The private jet would be arriving soon, and once it got here, I’d be away on my mission.
Jolt stood next to me, our shoulders barely touching. He wore a sleeveless version of his uniform, letting his muscular arms show in the morning light. He met my eyes for a second, and I was taken by the total pureness of the blue in his eyes; they looked stunningly beautiful to me. His short black hair whipped back and forth subtly in the breeze, the lightning bolt in his hair sticking out like a sore thumb. He just seemed to perfect to me.
Without thinking, I reached out and took his hand, starling him slightly. The hair on the back of my next rose momentarily as Jolt realized I had grabbed his hand, and he blushed, looking away abruptly.
“Isn’t this morning beautiful?” I whispered to him, smiling to myself.
He nodded slowly. “Yeah, I guess so. I wish it were raining, though. Everything looks better in the rain.”
“Even me?” I asked teasingly.
“You look better in any—“ He caught himself, his cheeks flaring up brightly. “I mean, uh, you look nice.”
I held back a laugh, humored by his awkward behavior. For someone who usually had a rock solid attitude around other people, this side of him was a nice change, and I think I kind of liked this side better. He wasn’t as distant this way, and he seemed more vulnerable and open. Both of which I liked to see in him. It made him seem so adorable.
“Thank you. You look nice too,” I said, grinning from ear to ear. I caught the hint of a smile play across his lips, but it was lost in the sunlight.
Jolt shifted awkwardly, trying to figure out how to reply. I started talking, but cut himself off almost immediately, changing his mind about what he was going to say. I squeezed his hand and turned to face him, forcing him to look me in the eyes. He shrunk under my gaze, but I held his stare, coaxing him closer with my eyes. I began to lean forward, and Jolt began to lean forward too, as if driven by instinct. We were just a few inches away—
“Are you guys done?” Natalia’s snarky tone tore through my fantasy, making me step back away from Jolt. “I’d like you guys to get on your way. We’re running out of time, and we can’t afford to waste it.”
“Why do you keep saying ‘we’?” Jolt questioned, glaring at Natalia. She stiffened, returning his glare. “Last time I checked, you weren’t coming along.”
“I’m not, but one of my assistants is,” Natalia said, stepped aside to reveal a boy that appeared to be in his mid-teens.
He had blonder hair and blue eyes. His eyes weren’t as startling as Jolt’s, but they still had a special quality I couldn’t place my finger on. They seemed to be glowing, almost. Odd.
