"Well don't you get around little Miss Everett." Lucy gasped teasingly, "The new kids been here for under a minute and you already have a history with him."

I nudged her with my elbow viciously when Mr Jefferson returned his stare back to the register.

"Ow bloody hell." She hissed.

"Stop, I'm mortified." I groaned as I let my head fall against the table, "I thought I would never have to see the prick again."

"You know, I think he can hear you." Edward sniggered, "He's looking over."

Edward was right. Jared was staring right at me, a huge smirk on his face. I felt myself glare involuntarily at him. I had half a mind to give him the finger.

"Hey, maybe you two will have classes together. This way you can finally reconnect?" Lucy said casually.

"Oh piss off." I scowled.

Mr Jefferson passed around our schedules. Edward raised his eyebrows at me when I snatched mine away from him.

"Hey, don't take it out on me. I wasn't the one who stole your first kiss." Edward muttered under his breath.

We all swiftly checked our schedules and I was happy to find that I had most of my classes with my friends. The only class I didn't have anyone I was particularly close with was English. I prayed silently that Darren hadn't chosen English Literature for an A-Level subject. He had never shown a particular interest in books, in fact, he had often teased me whenever he had come into my room and found me with my head buried in a book.

"Come on you, we've got biology next." Edward smiled, pulling me away from thoughts of Darren.

I walked out next to him and we yelled goodbye to Lucy and Violet. I noticed Jared walking the opposite direction to the science lab and breathed a sigh of relief.

It seemed that I now had two people I was desperate to avoid today.

"Ah Miss Everett, it's nice of you to finally join us." Mr Tanner voice boomed when I stumbled through the door of my English classroom. His small beady eyes took in my flushed appearance and panting breaths. "It seems that you have decided to run a marathon instead of coming to my class on time."

I resisted the urge to roll my eyes at his rubbish joke. For as long as I can remember Mr Tanner had hated me, with a passion. I had no idea what I had done to make him hate me, I wasn't the worst student, I always gave in my homework on time and I tried my best to answer questions in my class, but Mr Tanner had always had a passionate dislike for me.

"Well I-"I panted but I stopped short. I doubt that Mr Tanner would understand that I was late to class because Edward had pulled me all the way to the Sports Hall by the back of my bag with his stupidly strong arms just for fun and to make me late.

"There is no need to bore me with your excuses Miss Everett." Mr Tanner waved a hand dismissively and I bit my tongue to hold back the insult I was dying to call him. "Let me just look at the seating chart to see where you're seating."

I glanced around the class while Mr Tanner walked over to his desk and rifled through a pile of papers. Another reason to hate Mr Tanner, what kind of monster had seating charts?

The English classroom consisted of four rows of connected desks, pale yellow walls and a disgustingly dirty grey floor. My heart seemed to stop when I saw there was only one free seat on the second row. This free seat happened to be between the two people I could not bear to sit with, Darren Miller, my ex-boyfriend, and Jared Felton, the prick who stole my first kiss.

"You've got to be joking," I grumbled.

"Miss Everett, please take a seat between Mr Miller and Mr Felton." Mr. Tanner seemed to sense my hatred because a smile made its way onto his lips. I didn't want to show any weakness so I held my head high, gritted my teeth, and marched towards my assigned seat.

I slumped down in my chair and crossed my arms over my chest, not bothering to hide my disdain now that Mr Tanner's attention was elsewhere.

"Well look who it is." Jared drawled, "Can't seem to stay away."

I scoffed under my breath and kept my eyes fixed on the large whiteboard at the front of the classroom. I didn't want to give Jared the satisfaction of even looking in his direction.

Jared let out a small chuckle; he obviously found it amusing that I was ignoring him.

What an idiot.

"Hey," Darren greeted me sheepishly.

I swallowed hard but attempted a polite smile, "Hey."

I sneaked a glance at him and wished I hadn't. He looked good, all nice and tanned after his holiday in Spain. I may have stalked his Instagram over summer. He looked as if he were trying to find something to say to me.

"Good summer?" He finally came up with.

I shrugged, "Yeah it was alright. How was yours?"

Funny how this was the one time Mr Tanner seemed to not mind people were talking in his class. What would I give right now for one of his scoldings.

Darren shifted uncomfortably, a flash of guilt entering his eyes. "Yeah, it was ok." He repeated before chucking uncomfortably. "I was actually meant to text you, I'm actually with Hollie now – "

I blinked in surprise at this new information. I felt my stomach drop at the thought of my ex-boyfriend moving on so quickly but I knew there was nothing I could have done about this. I knew Hollie, she was a nice girl from my Welsh class.

"Well..." I thumbed one of my rings uncomfortable, "Good for you I guess."

"I wanted to talk to you about that text I sent you too...I'm sorry." Darren ran his fingers awkwardly through his hair.

I knew the text he was referring too. It had been about two weeks ago at around three am. It had been a simple I miss you. I had wanted to reply at the time but I concluded it would only complicate things. He had broken up with me over text, I deserved better.

"Hey Darren, maybe English class isn't the best place to talk about this," I said quickly. I was very aware of Jared looking at us with interest and the last thing I needed was him hearing about my awkward breakup.

"Yeah, yeah ok." He mumbled dejectedly.

"The book that we are studying which is called Of Mice and Men, for those of you who have only just started listening, is about two men called George and Lennie who are trying to pursue their American Dream." Mr Tanner explained but I found myself zoning out. I tried and failed not to imagine Darren and Hollie getting it on.

"Hey, don't worry about it. I'm sure you're much fitter than her." Jared whispered to me.

I stared at him, perplexed.

His lips twitched into a smile once again before he turned his attention back to Mr Tanner, who was now raving about some woman named Curly's wife. I knew that I should have been paying attention but I was too busy thinking if I could get away with punching the new kid in the face without getting expelled.

"You're actually unbelievable." I shook my head in amazement.

Jared only laughed under his breath.
