Dear Diary

Gideon was finding me an ice pack for my face while I painted my nails in the den. Gid was pretty guilty about what had happened, so he'd been slaving for me all afternoon- it was so fun! I kept thinking to myself,

"I should beat up Charlotte more often!" The only thing that bothered me was the constant texting between the two of them, honestly it got pretty annoying. We'd be having a nice conversation and then he'd stop talking and text her back. I mean, I guess that since they're going out an all it makes sense, but still- swelling face here. Every time he picked up his phone I'd roll my eyes and make a gagging face. He'd laugh and text her back, really I couldn't help but feel a bit threatened.

We had watched two seasons of America's Next Top Model and the show was getting old. We were on the big couch in the den sitting by each other but not touching. I kept looking at him from the corner of my eye, hoping he'd be dreamily looking at me, but as it turns out he's more interested in a bunch of models, go figure! Finally he cleared his throat and suggested that we do something else.

"Like what?" I asked, defiantly curious as to what he was thinking. He smiled at me mischievously, his smile lopsided and sly, and pulled my off of the couch. I protested seeing as I hadn't showered or brushed my hair, but he had a strong hold on my left hand and was dragging me out to his car. "So... where are we going?" I urged as he pulled out of my driveway, heading towards the highway. In reply he rolled down the windows; the wind ruffled up our brown hair and spread a smile across my face. Pretty soon we were singing to We Found Love by Rihanna, making the weirdest noises as our voices strained to keep up with the music.

We had been driving for half an hour by the time he pulled over at a truck stop in the middle of nowhere, laughing at my confused face. I envisioned a gang of unruly men drinking at a bar that had probably never been cleaned. Punching me lightly on the shoulder he said,

"Hey, don't be scared. I love this place!" I forced a smile and suddenly felt self-conscious of my baggy pants and low cut tank top. He walked confidently towards the door and I hid myself behind him giving him death glares when he looked back, comfortingly squeezing my arm as we walked inside. It wasn't as bad as I thought it might be, no blood splatters on the ground or tough looking biker guys. Instead, it was warm and inviting; the elderly woman who stood behind the counter instantly recognized him and invited us over. The only other customer was a thin man with large glasses and a stutter, to whom Gid said,

"Hi Joe!" The man nodded in response and turned his focus back to his coffee. Feeling more confident I wandered around the small area, laughing at the tacky merchandise while Gid ordered some of the "world's best" apple pie. When we sat down at a booth in the corner with two huge plates of pie I asked him,

"How do you know this place?" He smiled at me, and then looked down at his plate.

"My dad used to own it. You know, before..." He trailed off, looking out of the window towards the car. “I mean, he built this place up. It was just a crappy gas station no one stopped at, so he tore it down, rebuilt it and bought new stuff. I used to come here all the time, but lately I've been pretty busy." He paused, looking up at me, laughed uncomfortably and smiled up at me. I noticed how beautiful his eyes were and momentarily couldn't breathe. Suddenly he was looking at me expectantly and I realized he had asked me a question. Nervously I wracked my brain for what he might have said, but he cut in and said,

“You don't have to if you don't want to; I was just thinking that if you needed money it would be a good idea to babysit my little sister. My mom would pay you, and Cindy loves you." Gid's little sister, Cindy, was an angel, and I was surprised that she'd like me so much considering we'd just met at her ninth birthday party. Breathing a sigh of relief that he basically repeated the question I smiled and nodded yes.

"Yeah, definitely, I'd love to!" I made a mental side note that maybe this meant I would be able to spend more time with him, you know, in order to pull him away from Charlotte. As it turns out, he doesn't have to pay there, so we finished our pie and left, the kind waitress walking outside to wave goodbye as we sped away down the highway. It had been the perfect day, besides my throbbing eye, and I breathed a content sigh as I leaned my head back against the car seat. Opening one eye I said,

"Gid?" He looked away from the road towards me.

"Yeah?" he asked, looking concerned, probably because he thought I had developed a concussion or something. Laughing a bit I answered,

"Thanks for the day. It was amazing." His eyes crinkled up again as he turned back to the road.

Suddenly, I can't help but feel incredibly guilty for what I'm doing to him.
