King Rakia waited anxiously for his wife’s screaming to end.  Waiting for his child to be born was too nerve-wracking for him.  If it was a boy, he would be rejoicing.  A girl would be a horrible curse.  She could never know her parentage, unless something terrible happened.  But his adversaries would never dare…

At that moment, his most trusted advisor, Lord Triven, came onto the balcony the king was standing on.  Triven laid his hand on the king’s arm.

“Tell me it is a boy.  For the good of the country, tell me.” said the king

“I’m sorry my lord, it’s a girl.  Shall we enact the plan?”

The king looked up at the purple sky.  He couldn’t concentrate on the beautiful constellations because of the news that Triven had just brought.  “Yes,” he said.  “Remember the preparations, take her to the village.”

“Um, my lord,”  Lord Triven coughed into his hand, “she needs a name.”

“Cassandra will be her royal name, her hidden name will be Fira” the king replied.

“Thank you, my lord.  I shall be off.”  With that Triven left.

The king looked up at the sky and said to the stars, “What have we gotten ourselves into?”

That evening, the kingdom waited on its toes for news of the king and queen’s child.  The horrible news came; the child was a stillborn, there was no prince or princess.

Mary heard a slight noise outside her door.  She up out off her cot to go investigate.  She opened the door to her small shack and looked down at the door step.  There was a baby wrapped in a thin blanket with a note.  Mary was happy she learned how to read when she was a servant in the castle of the local lord.  She picked up the note and read it, it said:

Please take care of my baby.  Her name is Fira.  I have no means of providing for her.  Don’t come looking for me, the nun who is writing this has sworn not to tell anyone.

This was puzzling.  This poor little child had nowhere to go.  Mary was secretly glad that the mother of this child chose this house, as Mary and her husband could not have children.  She looked around, and when she saw nobody there, she took the child inside.
