Hollow pounding roused me from a heavy slumber. I didn't know if it came from my throbbing headache or if it was just another knock at the door pleading for me to come out of the safe confines of my room. I half heartedly listened for the answer, still pressed beneath a groggy haze. A weary voice on the other side of the door told me it was the ladder.
"Ken..." Maddison hummed, unsure if I was awake yet.
I lay still, letting the covers block out any inkling of sunlight that might be peering through the thick curtains. Maybe she'll go away, I thought to myself.
"I heard that." She said, annoyed.
I rolled my eyes. "What do you want?"
"You're not going to stay in there and pout all day." She said, pausing to let me answer. I didn't. "Either you get ready and come out or I'm going to drag you out."
I rolled over to clutch my pillow and shut my eyes hoping she would give up like she had the past two days. All I needed was Thor and a comfortable bed to let the days waste away in a dreamy blur. I convinced myself that, if i wedged enough time between myself and the day I kissed Julian, it would somehow make things get better. That was getting harder to believe by the second. I clicked my tongue - a call Thor always responded to. I waited, expecting him to promptly burrow up to my face from beneath the blankets but he never came.
"Where's my dog?" I turned my face to the door, knowing Maddison was still waiting outside.
"You'll have to come out to get him back." She answered. I could practically hear her grin.
I whiped at my conjested nose and grudingly made my way to the door.
"You look like hell." Maddison said with a contorted expression.
"I feel like hell. Where's my dog?" I asked again.
"With Warren." She said. Her hand shot up to check my temperature. She drew in an exaggerated hiss. "You need an ice pack or something?"
I swatted her away. "It's just a fever. It'll burn itself out."
"No...I think you'll need to go to our doctor on staff. Julian will be pissed if you - Oh."
The same choking sensation that I'd been trying to cough down the past two days returned. Just the mention of his name stung me with a sharp nostalgia. His lips, his hands, his hips...I remembered each feeling with immediacy and it was enough to knock the wind out of me. This feeling - muddled with a blazing fever and pounding cranium - caused my knees to buckle. Maddison linked her arm around mine exibiting the perplexing strength that lay hidden within her small frame.
"Sorry." She muttered in apology for bringing up the sensitive topic. "Let's go get Thor."
I gave a dizzy nod and she led me through the ever changing maze of hallways. When we found Warren, he was covered in suds and soaked from head to toe. His expression - pathetically aggrieved - generated the first smile to cross my face since I last saw Julian. It took this scene, and his blatant expression of malaise to draw me out of my thoughts and to finally appraise my surroundings. We were in the doorway of an oversized bathroom just off of a main corridor. The glossy gypsum tub was smothered under a canopy of suds. Bubbles lazily floated through the air and popped haphazardly before they could land on the floor.
"What did you do?" Maddison said stunned by the scene.
"He's so..." He heaved to catch his breath. "He's so fast...a wild beast."
Maddison and I exchanged glances. The look in her eyes was enough to tell me she thought he'd gone crazy. I shrugged my shoulders in answer, just as clueless. Then a blur skittered past my feet leaving a trail of soapy water in it's wake. Warren jumped out of it's path. His foot slipped through a tiny puddle and he tumbled backward, his arms flapping wildly but to no avail. He plunged into the over sized tub swallowed up by the ever multiplying suds.
Maddison guffawed. I ignored her wheazing chuckles and carefully slipped my way to him.
"Are you okay?" I choked through a laugh. The only part of him unsubmerged were his legs which protruded from the water at an obtuse angle.
