So That's Why It's Called That

So that’s why it’s called that:

I was blindfolded and Damien was leading me to my birthday present. Honestly I hadn’t expected him to get me anything; him being around was enough for me. But apparently it was odd not to give a present to your girlfriend. I was excited and very clumsy with this blindfold on. I tripped again and Damien caught me…again. He’d stuck very close by as I’d suddenly become a hazard to my own health. What can I say? I need my eyes.

“Are we there yet?” I asked. It seemed like we’d been walking forever, where could be possibly be going? Mars? Ah, stupid joke. Get it? My boyfriend’s from another planet.

“No, we are not there yet.” He responded with obvious amusement in his voice. Well I’m very glad that he’s having a great time leading me to my death. I’m bound to trip and fall off a mountain sometime.

“So what are you giving me?” I asked and he chuckled softly.

“Hayden why would I go to all the trouble of wrestling you into a blindfold and marching you around if was just going to tell you?”

“Is it a puppy? No no, is it a kitten? No! I bet it’s a bunny!” I said and he laughed.

“All of a sudden you want an animal? Why didn’t you tell me that? I would’ve loved to give you a pet. It would be a fascinating experience as I don’t know what it’s like to own a pet. We don’t have too many animals where I come from so owning one really isn’t a possibility.”

“Oh, well that’s okay. If I still want one I’ll get myself one for your birthday.” I said and he laughed sarcastically.

“It’s so nice of you to think of me.”

“So is it a puppy?” I asked and I heard him sigh. Somehow I knew he was rolling his eyes. No answer? I guess it’s not a puppy then. I really hate surprises, I just want to know what all this fuss was about and I’m very impatient. “Are we there now?”

“Yes, yes we are finally here.” He teased. My blindfold loosened and I gasped when he pulled it away from my eyes.

I was immediately disappointed at the sight in front of me. “You’re giving me dirt? Or is it like a special mound of dirt?”

“I didn’t get you dirt Hayden.”

“Then why have we walked all the way out the middle of the woods? You have led me to nothing, unless this is supposed to be one of those moments where we appreciate nature.” I joked and he gave me a sarcastic look. We were standing in the woods behind the cottage. A couple of trees surrounded us and there was a small clearing beneath our feet. There was a very small mound of dirt that had risen about an inch that Damien now sat in front of. “Why did it take so fricken long to get here if we’re ten steps away from the house?”

“I made you walk in circles around the back yard for ten minutes.” Damien laughed and patted the ground on the other side of the dirt mound. “Now sit.”

I did as I was told. “So what now.”

“Shh.” He commanded. Damien sat cross legged in front of me with his head bowed. His breathing was even and I would’ve thought he’d fallen asleep had I not been talking to him a few seconds ago. It was silent while we just sat in the middle of the woods…doing nothing.

“Damien? Why are you cryptically meditating while we sit in the woods? It’s kinda creeping me out.” I whispered to him.

“Hayden, please shut up.” He affectionately replied. I shut up and watched him.
