So just so you're aware, this is gonna' be a rant. It might make sense, it might not.. I guess only time will tell!
So I was trawling the interweb yesterday in search of new Sci-Fi shows... y'know, stuff that I've somehow missed or that's gonna' be out this year, and I quickly discovered that people are fucking stupid, people who really should know better.
Now don't get me wrong, I thoroughly enjoyed watching the first series of Game of Thrones but let's be honest, it is in no way science fiction - it is most definitely a fantasy series.
The same goes for Camelot. The show was billed as science fiction but again, it is fantasy. If there's anything remotely sci-fi about it, it's that it is set in a possible alternate history.
Even shows like Nikita & Alias get billed as science fiction, and it's just fucking annoying. Like the Bond movies (and I do love a good Bond movie - Connery all the way), they are spy-fi.
Buffy the Vampire Slayer was always billed as sci-fi too. For fucks sake, seriously?
I suppose the Sci-Fi Channel (or SyFy as it is now) doesn't help. I recently watched The Almighty Johnsons, set in New Zealand telling the story of four brothers who are the reincarnations of the old Norse Gods. There is nothing remotely science fiction about the show, yet it's gonna' be broadcast on SyFy. Don't get me wrong it's a fucking excellent show and I recommend you watch it - but it ain't... fucking... sci-fi!!
It seems that anything remotely alternative gets called science fiction, and for those who don't know any better it's misleading.
Even on Amazon... two of George R.R. Martin's Song of Ice & Fire books are in the top three science fiction books for kindle. Come the fuck on Amazon, get your shit together!
It happens on here too... and yes I know that it's down to the author of a given piece to denote the genre, but come on... if you're writing Sci-Fi you know you're writing Sci-Fi... vampires/werewolves/ghosts/whatever do not make it science fiction, unless of course you're writing a Sci-Fi/Fantasy... but then again if you're only reference to Sci-Fi is that your story is set in the future, then it isn't fucking Sci-Fi!!! I'm not gonna' name and shame... you know who you are! Sort it the fuck out!
Firefly, Battlestar Galactica, Star Trek, Star Wars, Andromeda, Eureka, V, The 4400, Lost- They're all Sci-Fi, and yes there's many more, those are just a few examples.
Anyway... like I said at the top this was nothing more than a rant... so thanks for listening!
Oorah!
