Chapter 19
(Please see A/N at the end of this chapter)
Marcus’s wolf growls yet again, causing me to flinch. What was wrong with him? Something wasn’t right. Looking a little more closely I could see his pupils were dilated and he was even foaming at the mouth.
A small whimper causes me to avert my attention to a small figure laying behind Marcus. Oh shit it was Elaina, on the floor. Had he hurt her?
“Wolfe…look.. Elaina could be hurt.” I whisper from behind Wolfe, my buzz completely gone.
“Shh.” Is the only response I get. He must have spotted her too.
“Marcus, I’ll ask one more time……WHAT? THE. HELL?” contrary to the situation in front of us, Wolfe’s voice sounds leveled and calm.
In response, Marcus’s lips pull back to flash his sharp canines. Was he seriously challenging Wolfe??
“Change back, NOW.” Wolfes voice is full of alpha authority. Which has absolutely no effect on Marcus, seeing as he is technically alpha too.
He edges closer, his furry body trembling with anger….or was that pain? He whimpers softly, before recovering quickly and growling back at us again.
“Gabrielle, listen to me closely. Move back until your feet touch the wall. As soon as they do I want you to crouch down and cover yourself, you hear?”
Oh my god no…Wolfe was going to prepare to fight his cousin. I couldn’t let that happen. Couldn’t he see there was something wrong with Marcus?
“Wolfe..” I start but then he says, “Do it. Now.”
“He’s sick…there’s something wrong..”
“Now!” I flinch at his tone and decide to listen to him, for now. I slowly inch my way back but don’t fail to notice Marcus’s eyes narrowing in on me.
Before I even reach the wall Marcus explodes into action, automatically trying to sidestep Wolfe to get around him. Was he coming for me?!
In a split second Wolfe intercepts him, grabbing him roughly by the shoulders and shoving him back. He doesn’t bother to change, instead uses his human advantage to throw him off.
They slowly circle each other, I know Wolfe is doing everything he can to get his attention off me. I take the opportunity to inch closer and closer to the side getting as possible to Elaine. I might not like the girl, but I wasn’t completely heartless when it came to her. I had to at least check if she was alright.
Wolfe was beyond words now, fur was starting to sprout out of his arms showing that he was quickly losing his patience. Stopping just a few feet away from me, he braces himself as Marcus lunges at him. I gasp and freeze praying that Wolfe would see that Marcus wasn’t himself. Because if he didn’t, he was signing his own death sentence.
Instead of clamping on to Marcus’s neck like I thought he was going to, Wolfe grabs Marcus by his stomache and tackles him to the floor. Pinning him down with his own weight.
By this time, people have gathered around us obviously hearing all the noise coming from the hall. It takes at least 4 guys to subdue a buckling and thrashing Marcus before the local packs doctor jumps in and injects him with what I’m guessing was something to knock him out. All this time I had been standing not ten feet away watching in horror. What was wrong with Marcus??
My eyes snap up as Wolfe comes nearer, his face hard and grim. His clothes were a little torn up from where Marcus was trying to get at him. Thankfully, there is no blood in sight.
“How is she?” Wolfe asks, motioning behind me. What? Who? Oh crap. I had totally forgotten about Elaina.
I turn around to find her still on the floor, her eyes wide as she looks toward the people now taking Marcus away.
“Er..I guess she’s okay.” I mutter. There was no blood, which was good.
Jane, the alpha from earlier crouches down next to her to check on her.
“I can stay with her and wait for Aimee if you want to go get cleaned up, Wolfe.” Jane says looking up at us. She motions to the packs doctor, who I guess is Aimee.
