Chapter Four

I slipped my legs around the black leather seat, straddling the monster between my legs. I felt my tiny leather skirt ride higher up my legs, exposing me even more. My tiny tank tightened against me, brushing against my nipples as I reach for the Harley Davidson’s handle bars.

I shake my head, throwing my strawberry locks over my shoulders as I turn in my seat to glance at the man beside me.

‘You just gonna stand there staring at me all day sweetheart, or are you gonna get on the damn bike?’

I watch him swallow, his Adams apple bobbing up and down in his throat. He nods his head, sliding in behind me, so close that his hips dig into me.

I smiled as his hands curled around my waist, brushing against my breasts. I revved my Night Rod, enjoying the sound of the V-twin engines before zooming off out of the garage.

Without my helmet, the world seemed more wild and in my face. My hair flew everywhere, and he clutched my body so tight and close that I might’ve been on his lap.

His hard thighs pressed against mine and his chest almost flat against my back. I could feel his hot breath on my neck.

We sped down empty roads, purposely avoiding any busy street that might be hiding coppers.

We rode away from civilization and into the thick bush of the Australian outback, the smell of eucalyptus and dust hitting me in the face.

The road gave away to dust and dirt as we left the main road, weaving through an open farm gate and over bumpy rocks.

I pulled the brakes back, revelling in the wave of adrenalin that ran through my body as the bike skidded to a halt, sending red sand into the air.

I laughed as the dust calmed down, falling against my skin, mixing in with my sent.

Strong arms that were once tight around me relaxed, and a head, smelling of burnt amber, left the crook of my neck.

The bike shook gently as he climbed off, stretching his arms high in the sky and giving me funny looks from across his shoulder.

‘Did you enjoy the ride, Conner?’ I asked, leaning forward and resting my arms of the bikes handles.

Conner shrugs his shoulders, leaning against a tree before sinking to the ground and pressing his eyes shut.

‘Scared the bloody life out of me.’ He says, but his words are without the humour that generally comes with the complaint.

I slip off from around the bike, my boots shaking up dust as I walk over to him, dropping onto my knees and settling myself between his legs.

‘What’s the matter?’ I ask, cupping his face in my hands, forcing him to look at me.

He opens his eyelids, staring into my soul with shockingly clear blue eyes. He licks his lips nervously before opening his mouth and speaking.

‘It’s silly really,’ He says, trying to push me away.

I hold firm, grasping his chin in my palm with one hand and use the other to hold his head. ‘Tell me.’

Locking our eyes, Conner speaks. ‘When I was twelve, me and my mates stole our neighbour’s bike. The bike wasn’t exactly something to speak about, but our neighbour didn’t seem to think so.

‘The asshole had gotten so pissed when he found out that he came after us. Since he only knew me, he came after me first. Caught me when my folks were out. He was piss drunk and blue with rage, I doubt he even remembers what he did next.’

Conner pauses, taking a shaky breath as he forces his body to stay under his careful control.

I brushed a few stray wisps of hair from Conner’s eyes, caressing him as I wait for him to continue.

‘He beet the shit out of me, Ava.’ He whispered against my hands.

‘It’s okay,’ I whispered back.

‘No, it isn’t, Ava. He didn’t just stop there.’ Conner’s eyes glisten, but no tears fall.

I suck a sharp breath in through my teeth and pull Conner’s head to my chest, cradling him in my arms.

I close my eyes and press a kiss to Conner’s feverish forehead. His body shakes against mine, but no tears fall from his eyes as he tries to control himself.

I run my fingers through his hair, biting my lip as I try to stop my own sobs and the tears that involuntarily fall from my eyes.

I wheel the motorbike into my garage, kicking the stand into place. The sun was peeking out in the horizon, reminding us of our sleepless night spent in Eric’s bar and the small outback grove we found,

Conner stands by the garage doorway, glancing around uncertainly. I pull a grim smile as I watch him shift his weight from leg to leg.

‘Can you even ride that thing on your own?’ He finally breaks the silence, motioning to my bike.

I shake my no, ‘Only if I pick up another hundred kilos.’

‘Okay.’

Another awkward silence falls into play and me and Conner glance around the garage, avoiding each others gazes.

‘I should go,’ He finally says, catching my eyes.

He turns to leave, his hands in his pockets and his head hung low.

I felt my heart sink with each step he took. Impulsively I run after him, catching him a few steps away from my apartment.

‘Wait!’ I say, curling my fingers in his shirt, even though he has already stopped. ‘Wait, Conner.’

He smiles at me, a shaky twitch of his lips that seem so unnatural and fake. He searches my eyes as I continue to stands there, my fingers knotted in his clothing and my mouth repeating ‘wait’ over and over again.

He reaches a hand out brushes my fringe back from my forehead.

‘I’ll be fine,’ He says, and I know he means it. He’s been fine all these years hasn’t he?

He tries to untangle himself from me, uncurling my fingers from his shirt and gently pushing me away.

I swallow the lump that forms in my throat, and step back.

‘I’ll see you at Eric’s?’ I ask, my voice sounding shaky.

‘Yeah,’ Conner says, spinning on his heels and walking away with his shoulders straight, head held high and hands in his pocket.

                                       ***

Okay, its really cheesy and with tears and all that, but I wanted Conner to be vunerable and for them to bond over something.

I promised a long chapter and I wrote it, but honestly the part after this just ruins the mood. So, I'm saving it for next chapter.
