Cora has something special. Some people would call it stupid or fantastical, but Cora knows it's real, because she witnesses it every day. Whenever Cora shuts her eyes, she sees bright multicolored lights. They help her escape from things, like the thoughts of her dead parents, her dieing grandmother, and even herself. The lights give her a sense of power and happiness.

"C-Cora?" Cora's grandmother wearily called from her bedroom upstairs. Cora bookmarked the book she was knee-deep in and walked upstairs. "Yeah, Granny?" She said gently. Cora's grandmother looked tired. "Can you call someone, please?" She said, looking worried. "I- I think I need to go to the hospital, I-" Cora cut her off and grabbed the phone next to her grandmother's bed and dialed her neighbor's number.

"Can you just please come over? I'm really scared." Mrs. Kishi was rushing into the house in less then ten minutes. Cora heard the door open and called, "I'm up here, Mrs. Kishi! Come here!" Mrs. Kishi ran into the room and took a glance at Cora's gasping grandmother. "Oh my-" She picked up the phone without another word and called 911.
