I tried to resist the temptation to do it.
I really did.
But it was just sitting there and I was bored so..
I pulled the notebook closer to me, crossed my legs and leaned over it. I turned the first page slowly, feeling sort of bad about snooping around someone else's stuff, and was bombarded by a page of words written in cursive handwriting.
I stared at it for a while, not really taking in the words. And then, I read the words.
Is it still a secret if nobody cares
If having the knowledge in no way impairs
Your living - and feeling - the way that you breathe
Knowing the things that you know about me.
I didn't read any further than that, just shut the book and put it back into my schoolbag.
So he wrote poetry. Maybe I could talk to him about that tomorrow. But how am I going to talk to him without knowing his name? Maybe I could ask him his name when I give his notebook back. Yeah, that's a good idea. I'll do that.
And after that, all I could think about was this blue eyed blond boy who's name I didn't even know.
Like yesterday, Lucy picked me up for school, we went through art, lunch and all our separate classes, and then finally, science class came.
I came in early, hoping he'd be there. And he was, in the same spot as yesterday. He seemed to be writing on his hand, leaning over and letting his hair fall into his eyes.
I'd been feigning confidence all day; now I was a nervous mess and too shy to go up to him. Maybe I shouldn't go up to him. I mean, I was walking around in crutches with a big black mark on my face, and I hadn't been sleeping much lately and I look like crap. But then maybe he wants his notebook back. He seemed to have a lot written in it, and maybe it was important to him.
So, attempting - and failing - to calm my heart beat down, I clinked my way towards the front of his desk.
He looked up for a second, and then looked down and pulled the sleeves of his hoodie down over his hands.
Looking down, he said,"What?"
I stood frozen for a moment, amazed by his voice. Then snapping back to reality, I fumbled with the zip of my school bag and pulled out his notebook.
"Here,"I said, handing it to him."You, uh, forgot this yesterday."
He looked up at me with surprised bright blue eyes,"Oh, thanks. I was looking for that. You didn't . . . read it, or anything, did you?"
My face heated up, but he had looked back down at his hands again."No,"I lied, and he nodded.
I stood there, not really knowing what to say, when all of a sudden I blurted out,"I'm Tyler, by the way."
The boy looked up at me for a second, and smiled slightly. That made my heart beat even faster.
"I'm Ulysses,"he said."I just moved here yesterday."
I was about to say something when suddenly my name was screamed out, and I felt something tug my hand.
"Tyler! Look, look! I got a B!"
I looked down at Lucy and the piece of paper she was shoving in my face. I laughed at her and took it in my hand, reading over it. She'd gotten a B in her Spanish class, and the teacher left a comment saying "One of the best in the class. Well done."
"Isn't it great Tyler?"Lucy looked up at me with big eyes, clearly happy.
I smiled at her. "Yeah it is, Luce. Smart kid."
She laughed and hugged me."It's all because of you though. Tutoring me and all. Smart kid,"she laughed again, and then folded the piece of paper and put it in her bag.
"Um, Lucy aren't you supposed to be in class now?" I said to her, laughing slightly at the way she was standing still and bouncing almost simultaneously.
"Mm,"she said."Yeah. But I needed to tell you that and I was-"
Lucy stopped talking when she saw Ulysses.
She smiled, looked from me to him, and then back again.
I poked her in the back, warning her not to say anything stupid.
"Hi,"she said, beaming."I'm Lucy, Ty's best friend. You're new, aren't you?"
He nodded and flicked his fringe out of his eyes."Yeah. I'm Ulysses."
Lucy smiled even wider."That's a cool name! It means like anger or something right?"
"Something like that,"he said, pulling at the sleeve of his hoodie.
"Cool,"Lucy paused before saying,"You know, if you're not doing anything after school, me and Ty could show you around town. Since you're new and all."
