You had been right when you thought that you and Zack would be having a movie night while pigging out. Currently, you and Zack were lying on the couch. The two of you had finished the candy and ice cream during the first movie. The two of you were on the third movie and it was going on midnight. You were starting to wonder if Madeline was going to come home tonight or not. You sighed bored with the movie. Shifting your position you turned to face Zack who was lying behind you, only to find that he was asleep. You laughed softly noticing how cute he looked.
Standing up you made your way to your bedroom. Grabbing a pair of sweat pants and tank top you headed to the bathroom to take a shower. You figured you’d take one now instead of wanting till in the morning, knowing that you would have to go to work. You dreaded getting up at eight in the morning. Stripping down you took a quick, hot shower. Stepping out you started to get dressed but soon realized that you had forgotten your underwear. Figuring Zack was still asleep on the couch you wrapped a towel around your body and walked into your bedroom, without recovering your black eye.
You instantly regretted not putting make-up on as you came face to face with Zack who was sitting on your bed. As Zack took in your appearance his eyes grew wide. He turned away, hurriedly standing up and leaving the room, his checks flushed.
“I’m so sorry,” he told you as he made his way from the room.
You were too shocked to say anything back to him, your face a dark crimson. Quickly you grabbed your underwear and rushed back into the bathroom. Getting dressed you prayed that he hadn’t paid any attention to your eye. After you got dressed and had covered your black eye, you slowly made your way to the living room.
Zack was setting on the couch with his head in his hands. When he noticed you standing in the living room he stood up taking a step toward you.
“I’m so sorry Madeline… I didn’t mean to,” he told you, sincere.
“It’s fine,” you told him, blushing slightly. “I know you didn’t mean to.”
He ran his hand through his hair scratching the back of his head awkwardly. You shifted on your heels just as awkwardly not really sure what to do next.
“So,” you said, sighing, “Yeah.”
You walked past Zack and took a seat on the couch and he sat down next to you. Trying to focus on anything but Zack you couldn’t help but notice how he kept glancing at you. It seemed, to you, like he had something he wanted to say.
“Zack,” you stated, “if you have something to say, say it.”
You altered your position so you could look him in the eyes. He shifted uneasy; once again, scratching his neck awkwardly.
“Can I ask you something,” he questioned.
“Anything,” you answered.
“You’ll be honest,” he asked, finally looking at you.
“Always,” you told him sincerely.
“How did you get that black eye?”
“I- I umm…,” you hesitated truly not wanting to lie to him.
You quickly turned away from him afraid he would see the hurt and guilt in your eyes. He sighed sadly from beside you, gently placing his hand onto yours. Tears pricked at your eyes as you squeezed his hand.
“It was Reese wasn’t it,” he asked gently.
You bit your lip trying to fight back the tears. Afraid that your voice might break if you tried to speak you nodded your head lightly. Zack wrapped his arms around you and pulled you into him; balling the fabric of your tank top into his fest.
“I’m sorry,” you told him, the tears finally falling.
He held you to him tighter.
“It’s not your fault. Don’t you ever let him make you believe it’s your fault,” he told you.
After lightening his grip on you, he tenderly lifted your chin with his figure tips. Gently, he wiped the tears from your face. His eyes were filled with so much pain and anger. You didn’t understand though, you two were only friends.
