Chapter 1: Introduction
My name is Lyra Lockwood; I was 18 years old when I became immortal. I started changing in 1862; vomiting my own blood, losing sense of my own body, fever and going pale as a white hospital wall. Those were my symptoms. Those were the signs that shown that my body was changing, that I was changing. Immortality runs in my family’s blood, so it was destiny that made me who I am today.
At that time, my family was well known here at Boston. My mother was part of the town consul and my father was one of the generals in the civil war. Due to that fact and other reasons that are obvious, only a few mortals knew of our existence, the chosen ones.
I was the General's daughter and that meant everyone knew who I was. Besides of my father being the General, he was considered royalty in the immortal world, meaning we were always protected. Night and day there were guards shadowing us. Everyone in our family was much protected, but there is one thing nobody could be protected from, and that is Love.
Nobody realizes this until they fall for someone. They learn that love comes in different ways and in different forms. I didn't even realize this until I met him. He was black, shaggy haired, blue eyes, beautiful lips, tall, muscular and his name was Matthew. Matthew Corley. I can even remember how we met...
(1862)
The party was at its best, yet another celebration of an immortal congregation. That is one part I hated about my last name; being part of the immortal royalty. Everybody wanted to know you and what you could do. Being a level 5 immortal made you feel like a puppet everybody want to play with but could not. My best friend Emily tried to persuade me into dancing with her and drinking my dad’s whisky in the backyard, but the plans seemed unpeeling, especially if you felt as a freak as I did.
"Sweetheart?" my mother asked, interrupting my thoughts.
"Yes, mother?" I said as I turned around to face him.
"Are you feeling well? You are looking a little pale and lifeless” She said with a little laugh.
“Just getting used to this part of immortality mother, it is not something anybody can help me with”
“Your father thinks that it will help if you meet more people of you kind and learn to make them your puppets and not the other way around” She said as she took my hand and led me away .
“He has been in my thoughts yet again?” I asked insulted
“Your sister did not learn to snoop around from me but from your father, and it helps quite a lot, especially if you are human like me.” She whispered in my ear teasingly.
“At last my darlings! What took you so long?” My father said as he saw us coming to him.
“Lyra was hiding like a little girl in her own chair. She wasn’t even dancing John!” My mother replied
“Then we should fix that. Maybe meeting the Corley’s son will help.” Father said in a playful tone
"Alright” It’s not like I could not agree to any of what my father said.
I placed my hand above his as he escorted me to meet the Corley's son. Everybody parted and stared at us as we made our way to the Corley’s. When we reached them, they automatically paid attention, as usual.
"Nice to see you again General, and your daughter looks as stunning as ever!" Marcus Corley said in greeting.
"Likewise, my dear Marcus and Sandra,” my father kissed her hand,” pleasure as always. So where is your charming son?”
“He’s right here! Matthew, come here child!” Marcus exclaimed.
“Right here father” Said a handsome boy, around my age.
“Sweetheart,” addressing to me, “You already know Marcus and Sandra" Sandra and Marcus bowed as I acknowledge their presence, “This young man here, is their son Matthew. Boy, this is my daughter Lyra Lockwood”.
“Nice to meet your acquaintance” I said with a little smile in my face. I just could not swipe it off.
Matthew took my hand and kissed it, without moving his eyes away from mine. As he held my hand, I could have sworn I felt a little pull towards him.
"Beautiful name Ms. Lockwood." Matthew turned to my father and asked, “Would you grant me a dance with your daughter Lyra, General Lockwood?"
“Well of course boy, it is a party after all, and she does need the fun” My father said as he placed my hand over Matthew’s.
