Today is September 14, 1997.

Is invisibility possible? This boy won't look at me! I'm so mad. I don't know how my brother gets people to like him. I felt bad about what I did today. I feel like such a meanie head. He wouldn't look at me so I pushed him into the sandbox. I got in big trouble which was so scary. The teacher yells real loud and it made me want to cry. The boy got mad at me too. But he looked at me! Hooray!

And that was it. I flipped to the next page. Nothing, just a blank sheet of paper, just like the rest of the book. I closed the book confusedly. What the hell? Why did she suddenly stop? I had a feeling I was never going to find out who this mystery boy was.

Early in the morning the next day, as the sun warmed my face and back, I knocked lightly on the door. I leaned against the jamb, fully expecting no one to answer. I was wrong, as usual. She stood there on the other side of the door wearing a big T-shirt, pajama pants, and a blank expression.

"Hey there, sleepyhead," I joked, trying to lighten the mood. Max crossed her arms and lifted an eyebrow. I showed her the paper bag I was holding. "I've got pancakes." I jiggled the bag and offered a smile. She rolled her eyes and slammed the door.

"Oh, come on!" I shouted, throwing my arms into the air. "I also have bacon!"

"Go away, I don't care."

I knocked rapidly, making sure to do it in annoying patterns. She whipped it open again, an irritated expression on her tired face.

"Lemme make it up to you," I offered. "I'll buy you a present."

"Um, not interested." I put my foot in between the door and the door jamb before she could close it. She smashed it anyway.

"Fuck!" I yelped. I didn't remove my foot though. I shouldered my way inside, limping on the sore foot and shaking it to get the feeling back. "Did you really have to do that? They make look so easy in movies."

"What are you doing here, Greyson?" She walked into the room and stood in superior way. The room looked different. It was brighter and cleaner and the furniture was newer.

"Did you do something different here? It looks nice."

"Stop swaying from the subject!"

"Fine, sorry." I took a deep breath and let a pleading look consume my expression. "Please forgive me, Max. I really feel awful about what I said last night. If it makes you feel any better, I didn't get any sleep after I dropped you off."

She looked bored and I fully expected her to fake a yawn or something. But instead she eyed my backpack suspiciously. I pulled it off my back and held it out in front of me in case she wanted to inspect what was in there. I bit my bottom lip as she threw it on the counter and rummaged through it.

"What the hell?" She held up a thong. It was from Victoria's Secret's Sexy Little Things collections. It was black and lacy and exactly the title. I laughed loudly, but it turned into a nervous little chuckle when I noticed she wasn't laughing along.

I cleared my throat, ready to explain. "Well, I thought that since, you know, your mom kicked you out-" her eyes narrowed dangerously, so I threw my hands out in a non-offending manner, "-temporarily, of course! because she found a thong that you said was yours, I mean, hey, why not keep 'em where she can't find 'em, right? Am I right?" I scratched the back of my neck when she didn't say anything or make a move to try them on. Not that I was wanting that to happen! Because I wasn't.

"Oh, come on! Those were expensive!" I ran to retrieve them out of the trash where Max unceremoniously dumped them.

"I'm not wearing them, so you might as well return them." She huffed indignantly and turned away, heading back into her room.

"But you'll look so sexy!" I rested my forehead against the closed bedroom door. I sighed softly. "What do you want me to do?"

"Go away."

"I can't go away."

"Why not, Greyson?"

"We have a project to do." I silently pleaded this would make her open the door.

"So you finish the photos, I finish the writing, and we hope they match in the end. Now leave." She ushered me out the front door and closed it with a bang.
