Chapter 1: Things Change

I was out in the forest all alone, and all because my father was a bastard. Leaving the pack at this moment was probably the worst idea ever, but I couldn’t stay. Not if my father was going to make me mate his best friend, who by the way I always thought to be like an uncle.

Just turning seventeen I had plenty of time to be mated. Hell! Most girls my age were already mated with kids. I sniffed the ground making sure I hadn’t wandered onto another packs land. Not smelling anything wolf related I found a tree and curled up under it. I was glad it was summer since I had nowhere to go and the weather could be worse.

Hoping no male was around I tried to fall asleep to no avail. Sighing, I cursed myself for remembering I was in heat keeping me bright-eyed and awake with fear.  Getting up I decided to keep running. The further I got into civilization the sooner I could un-tie the shorts and tank from my ankle and shift back.  I wasn’t paying attention when I suddenly tripped over a tree root sticking out of the ground.

‘Shit!’ I whined. My wrist was twisted at an impossible angle. Yep, it was broken.

Hearing a twig break, I froze. I jumped up using my three good paws while holding my injured one to my chest.

I blocked my mind, so whatever shifter was out here wouldn’t smell my fear. They could trace me just by using that. I backed up taking baby steps. I had to get away from here. I kept backing up until suddenly I was tackled.

I fell to the ground with at least two hundred pounds of Shifter on top of me. I was struggling trying to pull myself out from beneath him.

‘Please let me go! I’m sorry! I’ll go away! Please-.’ I yelped, still trying to pull myself out from under him.

‘Shh, they’ll hear you.’ He warned putting his head down beside mine and staring ahead of us.  It was darker than it was earlier. Almost pitch black.

Then I smelled who he was talking about. Humans. Or to be more precise, Hunters. I shrank back putting more of myself beneath his warmth. We waited a few minutes my heavy breathing the only sound to break the silence. Then he slowly lifted his weight off me. I bolted wincing at my paw that hadn’t healed yet trying to outrun him. Now that the hunters were gone, he was the threat. But before I could get a good distance away from him he pounced on me again.

‘Where are you going?’

‘Home.’ I lied.

His gray wolf smirked. ‘Liar, I’ve been following you.’

‘Excuse me!’

‘Your pack isn’t located anywhere near here. Is it?’ His gray eyes that were more silver darkened. ‘Damn it!’ He growled lowering his face into my fur. ‘You smell so good.’

I whined, not liking where the uncomfortable heat that was flowing threw me.  ‘You’re okay,’ He whispered while nuzzling his face deeper into my neck.

‘No, please. Please.’ I begged jerking my body away from him.  ‘Stop moving.’ He growled. I felt tears threatening to spill. ‘I’m not-‘He jumped off me. ‘Don’t move.’ He growled, at first I thought he was growling at me, but then I saw the glowing eyes of more shifters. Then I smelled them, horny males.

‘Stay away.’ My shifter wolf snarled placing his body directly in front of me.

‘We don’t want to fight you,’ One of the strangers snarled back. ’We just want the girl.’

‘Well, then you’re going to have to fight me because unless she wants to go with you, you’re out of luck.’

He looked down at me his silver eyes glowing a dangerous shade. I shook my head, scooting backward. One male was enough, but three of them would be gruesome.

I jumped at the sound of the shifter behind me. ‘We can share her. If you want you can have her first.’ My protector must not have like that idea because he lunged at him letting out a ferocious growl. I whimpered ‘Don’t leave me!’
