I Didn't Choose This Job [Watty Awards 2012]

I am now sixteen years old and have just passed all of my exams, my mum and I were going to celebrate by going for a meal but she got one of her mysterious phone calls and had to go away quickly. While she wa7 upstairs packing a few things including her gun I went into the kitchen and made her a flask of soup to she then said "thank you son and kissed me on the cheek then said when I come back we will go for our meal ". I then hugged her and said "goodbye". Little did I know that would be the last time I would see her and hug her?

As the days went by I missed her being around apart from going to the library I didn't really do much. I was slowly beginning to get worried as she was a few day's late in coming home and I hadn't heard from her she would usually get in contact to say shes okay or if she was going to be late.

I had just made myself some lunch when the doorbell rang as I opened the door there stood in front of me a policeman with a solemn face, before he said anything I dropped my sandwich and put my hand over my mouth I knew it must be something bad. He said "can I come in sir" I nodded and then we sat down on the couch.

He then proceeded to say "I'm sorry to tell you this but you're mum has been killed, my legs shook and tears of sadness ran down my cheeks the officer handed me a tissue. I asked to see her and he told me that I couldn't see her body. So I demanded to see the police reports.

He realized I wasn't going to give up so he handed them to me saying "very well sir ". Things that stood out at me were "she was ripped apart" and "there was blood all over the ground" then the last bit that stood out was "her heart and kidneys were missing". They had no clues except two sets of paw prints on the ground.

I then remembered what happened to me when I was fourteen and knew she must have been ambushed by at least two of them and they must have fought over her like she was a piece of meat, the thought of it made me shudder like a spider had ran up my back but I couldn't tell the officer my suspicions as he wouldn't believe me. I got so upset and angry at the same time I said to the officer " could you please leave" he said certainly sir but if there's anything I can do don't hesitate to get in touch" I replied " will do" once he left I slammed the door shut and fell in a heap on the floor.

After a few minutes I got up and went into the kitchen I tried to make myself a cup of tea but ended up spilling it I was so angry that I threw the cup at the wall it smashed into pieces. I sat down and cried for what seemed like hours it was like I couldn't stop I had never feel so much pain and loss. Being the only one left in my family I had arranged the funeral for her and put an obituary in the local paper.

Adam from the library turned up and there was a strange man who had sat at the back. I said "goodbye" to my mum as she was lowered into the ground and then Adam came over to me and said "keep in touch" I replied "will do". As I was leaving the cemetery the strange man came up to me and said my name is Mr. Chelby I was your mums lawyer she asked me upon the news of her death to give you her journal and a cheque as she had got herself insured, he also handed me two other journals I signed some papers and then said "goodbye"

When I got home I was that physically and emotionally exhausted that I fell asleep on the couch. I woke up and for a minute forgot she was dead and went to her room then it all came back. Instead of crying I decided it was time to read my mum's journal. After I had read it I knew I was right about how she died as her last entry said how she had been tracking a werewolf near where she had been killed.

I then thought about what to do with my life as now I'm on my own and I got angrier and angrier I could.ve punched a wall about what had happened to my mum but then I realized I wanted revenge for what happened to her but how do I get it.
