Cupboard Narnia

School was rubbish, as usual. Lily raked through her canteen lunch with her plastic fork, privately thinking that even her Dad's food was more appetizing than this swill. 

The curry was runny, half lumps of rice and vegetable, half dripping brown sauce.

Lily took a tentative nibble from one of the lumps, and almost choked.

She grabbed a salad bowl from the serving tray. Anything was better.

Lucy and Glitzy sat down across the bench from her, with equally horrible plates of school curry.

"Hi!" Lucy said, and nodded at Lily's plate. "Not eating your spaghetti?"

Lily looked at her food, alarmed.

"I thought it was curry." she said, worried.

"That's weird." said Glitzy. "I was pretty sure it was a pork pie."

"i thought it was pudding," Maria chipped in.

"Whatever it is, it was not nice at all. And considering I'm pretty sure this has to be salad, I'm just going to stick with this," Lily told them, wishing she was at home, eating leftover pizza, or maybe in the Cupboard. There wasn't much in the way of food there, but she was sure even grass tasted better than school dinners.

Lily watched, munching on her salad,  as each of the other girls took nervous bited out of their curry/spaghetti/pork pie/pudding.

In almost perfect unison, they all cried out a loud "EWWW!" and dropped their forks. Except Glitzy.

"What?" she said, chewing. "I think it tastes nice."

"I told you she was weird," Maria muttered to Lucy.

"Seriously," said Lily, chewing a carrot. "Even our Dad's stuff is better."

Maria, Anna and Glitzy knew exactlywhat she was talking about, they all nodded and laughed, and grabbed salad bowls for themselves - except Glitzy. She carried on valiantly eating her school dinner until it was finished.

She even went back for seconds.

"Glitzy!" Maria said, wrinkling her nose. "You're disgusting!"

"It's tasty!" said Glitzy, and everyone laughed again.

Lily thought about the Cupboard. Maybe the grass would taste better.
