Kathryn was reading on her bedroom couch when she heard a knock on her door. Not looking up, she yelled come in, and continued reading her book, The Vampire Diaries, chewing the tip of her long, black hair.
“Nak, Dad and I need to talk to you.” It was her mom. Kathryn grunted in answer, not leaving her book.
Her mom sat beside her on the couch and took her book away, she whimpered. “This is serious, ‘nak” Kathryn gave in and blew her hair out of her mouth. She looked towards her bedroom door.
“Saan si Daddy?”
“He’s.... in a meeting right now.”
“Akala ko importante ‘to....” She said, half-accusingly, eyeing her book in her mom’s hands.
Her mother sighed, noting the arrival of Kathryn’s respecting impatient nature. “Actually may iba pang mga taong pupunta para kakausap sayo.” Kathryn looked at her mom, confused. “Punta tayo sa baba, tara.” It wasn’t a question. Kathryn walked behind her mom to their living room.
Descending the stairs, she saw three more people in the living room besides her Dad, two adults and a boy about her age.
“Hi, Dad.” She kissed him before looking politely at their guest.
Her Dad cleared his throat. “Kathryn, remember the Padillas. They used to be our neighbors at our old neighborhood.” Kathryn nodded, slightly remembering them. “This is their son, Daniel.” He pointed to the boy sitting on their coach. White t-shirt underneath his black leather jacket, hair spiked up, she recognized him. He was all over the news, but not for commendations.
“Uh, Dad, sabi ni Mama may importante daw tayong pag-usapan?” She whispered to her Dad.
Her Dad cleared his throat again and moved closer to the Padillas. “This is what we’re going to talk about, anak. You see, our publishing company and the Padilla’s are going to merge.”
She nodded slowly. She understands the merging part, but why did they have to ask her permission about it?
Her Dad continued. “And we figured, the best way to do that would be through the descendants of both companies, you and Daniel.” As her Dad spoke, she noticed Daniel rolling his eyes, a clearly annoyed look on his face.
She faked a smile, still not understanding her role, so she'll manage the business in the future, that was a given. “Okay. Congrats, Dad.” Her Dad stared uncomfortably at her as the Padilla parents looked helpless. This time, her mom decided to give it a go.
“Nak...” Her mom wrapped her arms around Kathryn as they started walking towards the couch where Daniel was sitting. “You’re engaged.” Kathryn, wide eyed with shock, stared at her Mom. “To Daniel.” She then looked down at her new fiance. Her mom moved away from her as Daniel stood up.
A smirk on his face, he leaned down to her ear and whispered. “Hello... honey.”
