Chapter Two
Gabe Santano lived in a small town with his friends Jared Lee, Trevor Jonson, Andy Cheve and Charlie Jean. He has dark brown hair and light brown eyes. You can rarely find him without sunglasses on. Usually a color matching his shoes. His grades are average, just like his height and weight. But he's an amazing artist, a great sleeper, and way too much of a kind hearted lover.
The boy's climbed out of Trevor's car and ran for the door of the local Golden Corral, the only buffet, let alone restaurant, in town that was drug, smoke, sex and red neck free. Andy and Charlie slammed across the black top, arms pumping both with the bet made in the car in mind. Loser bought dinner. Jared and Trevor walked behind, whispering quietly together.
Gabe climbed out of the back seat slowly, his flashing phone in his hand. He had erased her from his contacts but he had her number memorized. He knew it was her who had called him. Gabe leaned an arm on the hood of the crappy white car. "I'll catch up in a minute," He called out to Trevor and Jared, keeping his eyes on the screen.
Trevor and Jared exchanged looks and sighed.
"I won bitch! Get out your wallet!" Andy yelled from the door of the Corral.
"You cheated!"
Gabe swallowed and hit re-dial on his phone. He could feel his hand sweating and shaking more with each ring. She had called him first. Maybe she wanted... he stopped that thought before it could progress any farther. She dumped him. After three years of being together. For another guy. She wasn't calling him back for any thing important. She couldn't be.
The phone rang three times before a soft voice answered; "Hello?"
Their song had been "Oh Darling" by Plugin Stereo and Cady Groves. They used to dance under the stars and pic nic at the park. Three years he was only with her.... that last one she was with him...and George.
"Hello?" The voice repeated. "Who's this?"
"You called me. I was just returning it."
"Oh."
Oh?
"Hi Gabe."
"Hi Kay."
There was a moment of silence. Gabe knew it was a mistake. Maybe she had butt dialed him. maybe she had hit the wrong contact. For all he knew she meant to call George. Their names were surely close together. Maybe she liked guys with names that started with G.
"Listen, Gabe. I was calling 'cause I needed my red jacket for this weekend. George is...well I just need it."
Gabe was quiet as he leaned his head on the hood of the car. Her voice was the only thing that brought him back to his old self. His happier self. All his best moments were when he was with her. They had been together for so long. too long. And now she was calling him for something he was sure he didn't have. Not to say hi or to say that she missed him. Just to get something back.
"I don't have anything that's yours Kay. I gave it all back to you the night you dumbed me in front of everyone like I was the bad guy. Even though, of course, you had been cheating on me for a year and a fucking half."
"Don't yell at me!" Kay snapped through the phone. "I don't need you to make me feel bad. I just want my coat. I know it's at your house. I left in your room last fall that night-"
"I remember the night Kay. And not only do I not have it, but I don't enjoy how you always make this look like it was my fault. Like I'm the bad guy."
"Gabe...I don't want to do this with you-"
"Then what is it that you do want Kay? Because you and I both know you got your ugly coat back the same night I gave you everything else."
Kay was quiet for a moment and Gabe rubbed his eyes with his fingers. Once again he had given in to Kay. His longing for her over powered his good sense. All he wanted was for things to be okay between the two of them. He wanted her back, in his arms, his bed, He missed what they were.
