Chapter 1:
Living in Chicago Illinois was supposed to be a good thing. It was something that would benefit the family in many ways. Ever since dad died, on the tragic day, it was up to me to keep the family together. But sadly that isn’t how this story ends.
But I should start from the beginning. Before moving to Chicago, before life became a mess, back to the night my dad died. I had just gotten home from a late night party with my college friends. Being 21 I was allowed to leave the house when ever and I was able to drink. I had only had one drink because I wasn’t in much of a party mood. But my friends insisted even though this was a bad night for partying, but I suggested that I be the designated driver.
I had just walked in the front door of my house. The house was silent and still, something abnormal for my family. I walked from the front door to the living room where two of my brothers sat on the couch. I looked at them and their faces were painted grim. A single look told me something was wrong.
“What’s going on?” I asked trying to liven the place up a little.
Danyal, my fifteen year old brother stood up. “Something happened,” he said in a sullen tone. I could feel the grief come over my face as I let my smile drop.
“What’s going on? Where is everyone?” I asked in a panic.
“They are all at the hospital with dad. He had a stroke and the doctors said he is now in a coma. They aren’t sure that he will wake up,” Danyal said. Dillon, my other brother sitting in the room, got up and quickly ran to the stairs. After a few seconds I could hear the slam of his door.
I walked over to where Danyal was standing, “Why didn’t anyone call me?” I asked quickly almost in a shout.
“We didn’t think you would care,” Danyal said. The words pushed me but not enough to lose control on him.
“What hospital are they at?” I asked him quickly.
“Did you really have to ask that?” Danyal said. He was right, I didn’t, and there is only one hospital in our area.
“Stay here,” I called to the two of them as I ran to the front door and back out to my car.
I guess now is an improper time to tell you about my family. But it may be the only time to get it out; I am the oldest of my brother’s. I’m Drake, like my parents I have brown hair and blue eyes. Tanned skin from the Arizona sun and muscles from time spent in the gym.
Dillon, is the next oldest and one of dad’s favorites. He is a twin to my other brother Derek. The two of them have a bond, they are identical they only way we can tell them apart is their eye color. Dillon has blue eyes like me and Derek has rich brown eyes.
