“I hate you!” I cried as I ran from the room, my face cold from the tears that stained it. “Austin wait!” I heard behind me, but I ignored it. I ran. I didn’t know where I was going. But I ran. I could still hear my name being called faintly behind me.

‘Austin..’

Ignore it.

‘Austin...’

Don’t let him get you.

“Austin, Honey wake up,” a voice said, shaking me awake. I groaned softly, swatting the hands away. “Get up Austin, your breakfast will be cold if you don’t get down there now.” She sounded angry. The order was followed by angry footsteps towards the door and the slamming of the heavy wood. ‘I should probably get up before I get whipped,’ I thought to myself and sat up slowly. Rubbing my eyes, I got out of bed and walked out into the empty hallway. It was cold, you know that wintery kind of cold you get each morning when you take off your blankets. I hate this feeling. Cold. It’s a terrible feeling.

“Morning sleepy head,” My dad said from behind his news paper. I looked at the front page headlines, ‘Mother and daughter in tragic car accident’. “So many bad things are happening lately son, this is why I don’t want you to drive that damn sports car everywhere,” Erik looked up from his pancakes and laughed. “I’ll drive whatever I want, however I want.” I rolled my eyes a little and sat down next to Lizzy as Erik and dad continued their conversation. “Morning beautiful,” I said to her quietly with a smile. “Mornin’ Austin!” She giggled, “Look what daddy got me!” She held up a Barbie™, it’s hair was long and tied up in a pony tail with some small braids. The outfit was close to a cowgirl outfit you’d find in a stereotypical western movie. Normal for Barbies™ I suppose.

“It’s nice,” I smiled, “What’s her name?” I’d always start a conversation with Lizzy. She’s smarter than anyone else in this hell hole. “Courtney!” She exclaimed and continued playing with her Barbie™ and eating her Mickey Mouse™ shaped pancakes. I looked up at everyone at the table and looked around at their faces. Until I caught eyes with Erik. We looked at each other for awhile then I finally blurted, ‘What.” He blinked quickly then smirked softly. Erik hadn’t payed much attention to me before I had announced that I was gay to our parents. They’d been married for at least a month now, but had been together for awhile. When I told everyone, Erik was the only one who changed from the news. “I’m going to tell everyone at school that you’re gay.”

“Go right ahead, they wont get to me. They all know I’m emo, you think I’d care if they knew I was gay?” I snapped back. Amy, my step-mom, smiled and set a plate in front of me. “Erik would you stop being so rude. You’ve been brothers with him for a month why haven’t you gotten used to it by now. Austin is amazing just the way he is and he doesn’t need your criticism.” I looked up at her and smiled in approval, then began to dig into my breakfast. We were silent for awhile, but Amy cut in with the question “Anyone want some orange juice?” Lizzy threw her arms in the air, exclaiming, ‘Me! Me! I do!” Amy poured us a glass and put away the orange juice then sat down at the table. And of course Erik had to chime in with “Austin can pour his own juice, he’s amazing enough isn’t he? Quit being a sexist bastard,” and I chuckled softly and stood up. I looked at Erik as I poured myself another glass then preceded to chug it then take my dishes to the sink.

“At least he has the decency to wash his own dishes,” my dad hinted at Erik as I was scrubbing away at the syrup that was stuck to my plate. “That’s because he’s gay. He’s supposed to do girly shit like that.” I coughed, trying not to laugh at his stereotypes. Erik’s insults cracked me up. I should probably be hurt, but honestly, I’m not. I know he’s not that smart in the first place. He was held back his senior year last year, not graduating with his class of course. Now I have to graduate with him. Best senior year ever, yay. I put my dishes in the drying rack and walked back up the stairs to my room. I made sure to give Erik a wink before I exited the room, which made him glare at me.

Today was my first day of school, Senior year. Maybe there’d be new kids. Some that would maybe like me. I went into my room and slipped on some black skinny jeans and a band tee. And yet another stereotypical look, oh well I like it. I brushed my hair quickly then shook my head to make it look a little messy but not too bad. “Hurry up, we’re gonna be late,” Erik yelled from the other side of the door. “Hold your stallions,” I replied, grabbing my backpack and car keys. Erik was grumbling some stuff to himself when I opened the door, and stopped when he saw me. I watched as his eyes took a slow sweep down my figure and back up. “Lets go.” He muttered and stormed off.

“Did he just check me out?”
