Nick POV

DJ had called me right after Sarah had left their meeting.  It had been a raging success and the other executives were keen to sign. He noted that she seemed distracted by the seclusion clause in the contract. Of course she would, she’d spent her lifetime trapped. The last thing she’d want would be to live inside a box because someone else told her she had too.

Dj asked me to talk to her, to have her see that seclusion didn’t mean complete separation from her life. I explained that wasn’t possible, but that I’d have one of my best attorneys read through the contract with her.

Dj had seemed happy enough with that idea, and had continued to exclaim how wondrous she’d been. Apparently she’d blown them all away with her rendition of one of my favourite Guns N’ Roses songs “Don’t Cry”. Of course, he’d sent me an unedited copy in an email attachment and the very first thing I did after we ended the call was download it.

When her voice filled my ears I began to smile like a school boy who’d just developed his interest in girls. In awe of her perfection I found myself glued to the spot just living to listen to her sing. When the music inevitably ended I played it again.

I called the lawyer not long after, and arranged for him to visit with Sarah. I then stared at Sarah’s phone number on my phone for a full half hour before I finally hit the call button.

When the call was picked up, I spoke, attempting to sound as relaxed as normal, when in reality all I want to do was tell her I loved her.

“I heard the meeting went well.”

“Why are you calling?”

“DJ mentioned you need a lawyer for the contract. He feels you’re a little overwhelmed and asked me to find someone to take a look over it for you. I’ve arranged for one of my attorneys to visit with you tomorrow” I offered, trying to sound like a caring friend.

“Oh, thank you. Honestly I really appreciate it”

“It’s no big thing.”

Neither one of us spoke for almost a full minute. Every time I went to open my mouth inappropriate words came to the front of my lips, words like ‘I love you’, ‘be with me’ and ‘I want to taste you again’.

“Sarah, I wanted to apologise for how I acted last night.” I exclaimed, finally able to express something appropriate to the situation, my remorse for my behaviour after we’d called DJ.

“You were speaking out about how you felt. I don’t think you should ever apologise for being honest, unless of course you’re being a moron” She replied, her voice was nonchalant at this point

“I was being a little bit of a moron Sarah, I was telling you how you feel, not just how I feel.” I murmured guiltily.

I heard shuffling and then a door closed. Sarah sighed then exclaimed softly

“I can’t keep going around this roller coaster with you Nick. I don’t know what way is up and what way is down anymore. What you said last night wasn’t that far off the truth. You and I were just not ready for each other.”

After she spoke my heart fell to the pit of my stomach. Even though she was just reiterating what I’d said not even 24 hours before, it hurt immensely to hear it. I wanted to be ready for her, More than anything, but only when she was ready for me.
