It was the first day of the second semester at P. K. Jefferson’s Boarding School and I was seeing the campus for the first time. I’d just arrived for my first day at the place as I stood on the curb surrounded by my baggage while the taxi cab I arrived in drove away. Feeling lost I wondered where and what exactly what I was meant to be doing at the time, a welcome letter the school had told me a “friendly student representative will assist you upon arrival.”
However, all I saw was a ginger headed kid staring at me from under his fringe leaning on a tree.
“Hey!” I called. “Stop checking me out and help me with my stuff if you think I’m so cute.” Flipping my hair over my shoulder and popping out my hip.
“Oh. So you’re the new chick then.” The boy said.
“Yeah I am the chick. I have a name y’know. It’s Alex.” I said slinging one of my bags over my shoulder holding out another to this redhead.
“I know that. It’s Alex Miriam Harper; you’re from Lititz, Pennsylvania. Your birthday is March 3’rd and your 14’th birthday is coming and you failed 10 classes and average C+ grades in 2 years of Middle School.” He said with a clearly satisfied smirk snatching the bag.
I faltered for a moment. “What are you some kind of stalker?! And why don’t tell me your name?” I said still dumbfounded, his smirk grew bigger (which I didn’t think was possible). How does he know all these things about me?!
“You stuttered, and no I’m not a stalker the school gave me your file.” He said coolly.
“And why would they do that?” I sassed raising my eyebrow. This kid was seriously bugging me.
“Why? Cuz they stuck me with the job of being your student rep.” He said back to looking annoyed. “Though I’ll admit I may have accessed your grades without permission.” A mischievous smile played cross his face.
My jaw dropped. So much for friendly student rep, and one who steals people’s records! I folded my arms cross my chest and heaved a sigh, annoyed. “You still didn’t tell me your name.”
“It’s James. James Johnson.” He said with a lopsided smile. “C’mon we gotta drop of your stuff at the dorms, just follow me.” Then he began walking away briskly cross the campus. I gathered up my stuff and followed behind stuck with this annoying kid.
James had bright blue eyes, boyish face, shaggy red hair, and just an inch or so taller than I. He also seemed to be ignoring the school uniform as he wore shirt and jacket but wore jeans on bottom and oversized skate shoes. Suddenly I felt like such a goody two shoes in my perfectly ironed uniform. Which was a white button up blouse with the school emblem and a just above knee length plaid skirt.
“So how did you end up as a student rep?” I asked, wondering how a kid like this got picked to do anything of vague importance.
He heaved a massive sigh and replied “Well they want your student rep to be someone familiar. A kid who you can always give your questions or sumtin’ so they pick whoever’s in all your classes.”
“Wait. You’re in all of my classes! This’ll be a long year…” I lamented.
He smirked. “Yup! You have to deal with me all day long. Anyways here we are at the dorms. Let’s just drop your stuff in the lobby. Staff’ll take it to your room. Grab your backpack too we gotta get to A period.”
“And where is that?” I aksed.
“English.” James replied simply.
“I didn’t ask what I said where.” Doesn’t this kid speak English?
“I know, I just like annoying you.” His smirk coming back.
My eyes popped but not wanting to give him the satisfaction I simply grabbed my backpack and crossed my arms in front of me with a huffy “Hmmph”
So my day so far passed in a similar fashion of James annoying me half to death and me coming up with clever retorts. Yet my insults didn’t seem to bother him that much which was even more infuriating. Though lunchtime was approaching soon and I still hadn’t met any kids to sit with, as me and James entered the science room I decided to ask whoever my lab partner was if I could sit with them at lunch. I surely didn’t want to get stuck with James anymore.
