Chapter Six

Our Temporary but Permanente House Guest

Nothing out of the ordinary for a month and a half happened. I was beginning to think that they overlooked our mission because there was nothing going on. We hadn’t been briefed or anything on any new information that was being released to us. Brez checked in almost every other day to make sure that I hadn’t killed Jeremy and to be honest, I was starting to like him as more than just a partner. I could tell that we had that connection. Thank god I hadn’t woken up to any more dreams of physic killers, although I did wake up one morning and punch him in the face because I thought that he was a bad guy.

The sexual tension is high, especially when he parades around the house shirtless or in his towel. He has made it his ritual to show his body to myself over and over again while I work. It’s quiet distracting. I tried walking out in just my towel and nearly lost it when I tripped over the rug in the hallway. Since then, I keep my clothes on except for nighttime because I have gotten too comfortable wearing nothing but one of his tee shirts.

Our party is tonight and I am super excited, note the sarcasm, that every one of our neighbors is going to be snooping around our house. We had to go through and lock up all the files in the office and put them in the safe. It would keep the nosey ones from our business and out of our dirty work, I hoped. I knew that people liked to snoop when they went to other people’s houses, although why anyone would want to be looking through any of my stuff I wasn’t sure. Jeremy and I only kept the basics. All of our clothes were bought for us and all of the pictures they fabricated at the beginning of the mission and were fake. We had to leave all of our personal belongings except for the ones that we really needed at home when we started what seemed like ages ago.

Just as we were getting ready to invite the crazies into our house, Jeremy’s phone rang. I was in the kitchen putting the last touches on cocktails for dinner and getting ready to fire up the BBQ to grill some appetizers. Jeremy came into the kitchen looking lost.

“I have to go,” he said as his face dropped.

“What’s the matter?” I asked genuinely concerned.

“Well, I can’t talk about it now but I will be back in a couple hours I have to drive to the airport and pick someone up.” He said grabbing his keys and walking out the door before I could even get a word in edge wise.

I texted him five times asking him who he was picking up but no answer. I knew that people would be showing up any minute now but I hadn’t finished anything and since he was gone, I would have to entertain everyone on my own.

“Knock, knock,” I heard at the front door. I hadn’t heard anyone ring the doorbell or knock so I automatically ran to the door practically killing myself over the decorations in the process. I didn’t like people just walking into my house and I was angered at Jeremy for leaving the door open I the first place. He sure seemed to leave in a hurry. My mind wondered what or whom he could of possibly needed to go get at an airport.

My body was shaking as the angered fueled me. I couldn’t believe he left me. I wasn’t a cook by any means and all these people were coming into my house. I chuckled at myself, trying to put on a façade that would stop people from asking questions.

“Hon, I’m sorry we came so early but Tommy wanted to get the food while it was still smoking hot’” autumn said as she rushing into the kitchen. She had a bowl of sliced fruit in her hand and I couldn’t contain the look on my face while she snaked her arms around my waist.
