Chapter 9, Part 2: …You Pay for Later
Miles looked away with a smile forming on his face. It wasn’t that familiar devilish smile that I had become so attached to over the years, though. It seemed more like one of those I wish you didn’t bring that up kind of grins. He ran his hand back and forth through his brown hair and shook his head as he chuckled a bit to himself.
My hands began to tremble, as I waited for him to respond. He started pacing the room and looking up at the ceiling, stalling as best he could while I sat there and tried like hell to keep my composure. But, all I wanted to do was stand up on Miles’ mattress and shout at the top of my lungs, just tell me!
The news would crush me either way, I finally came to realize. If he liked me more than platonically, I could potentially lose the best friendship that I had ever had. But, if he only saw me as Rachel, the friend – not the girlfriend – then I knew I would be devastated. There was a spark in that kiss, whether I wanted to admit it to Miles or not, I had to be honest with myself. I felt something. This was a lose-lose dilemma, and I was smack in the middle of it, teeter tottering on the fence, overwhelmed by the uncertainty.
But when Miles finally stopped, it looked like all of the color had drained from his face. The lines of his jaw appeared more shadowed than usual, contrasting sharply against his now pale complexion. I braced myself for bad news, fearing that Miles was about to deliver a devastating blow. I winced as he turned to me and took a deep breath before a long, drawn out sigh.
“Rach, I know this is probably going to be hard to hear, but I really – ”
“Rachel Elizabeth Carter!” A familiar voice shouted from what sounded like the bottom of the stairs.
Oh, my God! I thought to myself as I felt all of my insides begin to twist and turn into knots.
It was my mother.
“Quick!” Miles whispered as he pulled me by the arm off of his bed. I looked at him, my eyes widening, as he glanced around his bedroom trying to figure out what to do with me. My heart began to race wildly in my chest as I heard my mom stomp up the stairs, her heals clanking against the hardwood.
He finally decided that the closet would be best. As Miles shut the doors, I peered through the tiny openings to see my mom as she entered the room.
I could tell she was beyond angry. Normally, mom and Miles were so friendly – she would always joke that he was like her third child. But right now, she didn’t even say hello to him as she charged through the door and started looking under the bed.
“Uh, Mrs. Carter,” Miles began nervously. “Can I help you with something?”
“Where is she?!” Mom shrieked as she lifted the comforter off the bed and tossed the pillows to the floor. Miles moved out of the way and looked over towards the closet where I was hiding. “I know she is in here, damn it!”
“I, uh…I, I – ” Miles began to stutter. He hadn’t done that since elementary school.
