Chapter 1: Rain
As Katie leant against the window and watched the icy rain trickle down, she let it cool her. What have I done? She asked herself. Katie felt the smoothness of her locket in her fingertips and gripped it tight as if the slightess breeze could carry it away and it would be lost forever. Katie's parents died when she was young, but sometimes she felt a presence fill her. It was greater than life itself and it gave Katie confidence. The confidence needed after what she had found. She was sure it must have been her parents, who or what else could give her that feeling? It was a sense of security when the life she knew was crumbling at her feet, it was as if the pain she felt right in her heart was healed, at least for a while, and it was as if she knew. She knew how big this was, she knew how to fix it and she knew how everything will be okay.
Katie lived in an orphange by choice, she could have lived a wealthy life filled with money and, well, anything she wanted but it would all be a lie. Katie usually loved rainy days as they gave her a reason to go snooping around the orphanage, but not today. Katie had spent the morning looking around the orphanage for clues, evidence, anything she could find to prove Xian's guilt. She finally came close when she found the 'Student's Background Files' room. That was where they kept anything and everything about all the students' pasts. "Yes!" Katie said under her breath. She crept quietly through the partially closed door and into the small room. The room was crowded with filing cabinets, cupboards and drawers. They were all full and some were even overflowing. "Woah", Katie said in awe of this dark, crammed room with the potential answer to all her problems and her life of lies.
She tried to find her file. They were arranged alphabetically by surnames. Sadly Katie didn't know her surname and no one had ever bothered to tell her so she looked through all the files, scanning for her name. Katie's hazel eyes sparkled with hope as her anticipation grew and grew. "There" Katie said as she saw her file. She checked for her last name but it was just blank. "Dammit!" Jittery with excitement she opened her file. As she began to pull the paper out she heard something. Footsteps. She quickly threw the documents into the filing cabinet, slammed it shut and tried to run. She couldn't. Katie's thick, black hair was caught in the cabinet door. The footsteps grew louder. "No, no, no. They can't catch me in here!" Katie said to herself as she tried to open the cabinet door. Jammed. There was no escape now. She violently pulled her hair away from the door but the closer it was to coming out, the closer the footsteps came. Katie pulled harder and harder. Her hair finally came away and she sprinted with adrenalin fueled energy out the door. Almost. Katie stopped dead in her tracks as she came face to face with Ms Jones, the 'boss' as the kids called her. Katie's face went pale and her heart skipped a beat as Ms Jones took her to the famous 'office'. You only made it to the 'office' if what you did was bad enough to get you solitary confinement or worse...
