I felt all of the shudders of innocence float throughout my monotone body as I laid in a panic on the rough earthy floor looking up into the eyes of my enemy. My mouth chattering with shivers as my stomach jolted. I suddenly tore my eyes off the hideous thing and made myself twist my body around to run away from my paralyzed position. I sprinted at the thought of the hideous monster and hopped over the fence onto the freeway that was now closed since the attack. On the other side I could only see an old abandoned (much like everything now) Bass Pro Shop. Hoping over useless piles of junk and car pieces and avoiding the blood, guts, and cold lifeless bodies among the freeway, I stopped when I realized I had to make it on the other side where the coming traffic would(‘ve) be(een).
I tried to move one of the concrete bricks but it was no use and as I looked over my shoulder I could see the monster lunging towards me- Its limp dragging behind him recklessly. I shoved the block- still no use. Then I hopped over it, scrapping my right leg helplessly. Blood laid up and down it now and I uselessly tore my bandana off my head and wrapped it around my leg so that the being wouldn’t attract to it. Then continuing my run I jumped off the freeway and into the parking lot of Bass Pro Shop. Looking over my shoulder again I could see the zombie was right behind me and I pulled my pistol out of the back of my pants and aimed for his head. Taking a shot I missed as I realized how shaky my hands were and tried to shoot again. This time hitting him in the eye as he fell over and collapsed. Out of breath I felt as if I could do the same but it was only a matter of time before another zombie saw that one of his friends had been killed which meant more human life.
I turned around out of breath and ran to the front doors of Bass Pro Shop trying the door with the key hole in it. “Shit!” I cussed under my breath and searched myself for something that could possibly open the door. When I found an old pair of earrings I felt more thankful for the earing than for my own life and twisted it into the dead bolt door shoving it open along with myself, then slamming it hard again behind me, shaking, to lock it again.
Turning back around on my heels (not to my surprise) I found it empty. I sighed at the sign of no human life… I was tempted to call out, but if there were to be a zombie they would find me in an instant. So, lugging my bandaged self to the First Aid equipment section I pulled the wrap from the shelf and figuring there was “no payment needed” I unraveled it onto the floor and began quickly wrapping it around my injury than pinning it into place desperate to get my bandana back on my head. (I didn’t care how bloody it was). Then I ran to the food section realizing how desperate I was to eat something and pulled a bottle of water from the fridge.
I took large gulps; the water couldn’t get down my throat fast enough. Finishing off the liter of water I rummaged through the shelves in the back to find empty bags of what once held meat and other products. I let out a deep embroiling sigh of annoyance, searching again elsewhere.
I finally picked up the last couple of boxes obviously tucked away and hidden in the corner to open them up and find loads and loads of organics. Powdered milk, canned vegetables, a couple of last packed cans of Chef-Boy-R-D, and sweets- lots of sweets.
Letting my eyes take in the comferting supply of food I exhaulted relief and started slowely opening a bag of Hostess Cupcakes-Slowely, and carefully. After realizing I hadn't checked for zombies at all... but I was careless for the need of killing a being of one for I had food. Real food.
Chomping away at the cupcake I heard a disturbance from the main room that made me stop cold....
