I've had this idea in my head for a long time, so decided to put it down on paper. Enjoy x
I stumbled through the dark woods, I can’t be late! I had to see him one more time before he left. Running through the trees and bushes I tried to meet Jasper one more time. We had been together since birth, the best of friends and lately lovers. My dress slipped out of my hands and brushed the muddy floor, cursing I grabbed them and continued to jog towards the carriage that was driving away from the estate. Tears poured down my face as well as the rain water, my long hair getting increasingly damper by the second. It didn’t put me off, not once. I had to see him.
Bursting through the thicket and arriving at the main road, I bent over. Catching my ragged breath wondering where he was. The carriage was supposed to pass through this wood, my thoughts wondering the worst. Had I missed him? The tears began to flow more frequent down my face as I raised a hand to my forehead, moving my head right to left in sheer panic. He had left without saying goodbye.
Jasper Conrad was going off to the prestigious Harley estate in London, to work as an apprentice. Leaving me and my own family up here in York. I was first told the news yesterday, Jasper had known for weeks. Screaming at the top of my lungs I fell to the floor, I can’t have missed him. Then the faint sounds of hooves were heard around the corner, getting up from the floor I stood in the middle of the road. Soon enough the black carriage with our family coats of arms came ‘round the corner. My lips pulled up into a smile as I waved at the driver to stop, I stepped out of the way as to not get run over and slipped round to the passenger side. There sitting in the plush seat was a bemused looking Jasper, I laughed in relief.
“Yes Ma’am, I won’t be more than a minute.” He assured his escort as he jumped out of the carriage. I smiled as I ran up to him, engulfing him in a mighty hug. To feel his arms around me one more time was what I needed and craved the most.
“Jasper.” I said his name, through my tears and muffled by his dress shirt. “I thought you had left without saying goodbye.” He sighed and placed a kiss on my head.
“Never.” I pulled away and smiled into his face. Enjoying our last embrace.
“I can not believe you are leaving me Jasper Conrad.” There was a smile on my face but sadness in my voice, a lump forming in my throat.
“I am never leaving you Adeline Hayes.” He smiled as he pressed his strong forehead against mine. Sniffing I smiled up at him.
“Oh Good gracious, you’re going to be ruined for the Harley’s.” I backed away and straightened out his wet clothes, he laughed and removed my hands from his coat. Shaking his head at me, knowing I only want the best for him.
“I do not care, if it means being sent back here…to you.” My face darkened.
“No! You can not put your success behind myself, you must go and make your fortune.” Jasper chuckled at me before quickly pressing his lip to mine. Something we were never supposed to do, not in public but at this current time we did not care.
“Well, Goodbye Miss Hayes.” He took my hand and kissed it, normally I would have laughed and swatted him away but not now. I stood in the rain, tears falling from my eyes and sadness rolling of my being.
“Don’t forget me.” I whispered, Jasper smiled at me.
“How could I forget you?” He turned on his heel and slipped back into the carriage “Yes Ma’am I know it was not proper but I love her.” I smiled as he addressed Mrs. Porter, his governess. I watched as the cart pulled away and the sound of hooves was fainter with every step. I stood in the pouring rain watching my Love of 16 years leaving me, probably never to see me again.
“Yes Ma’am.” I nodded to my mother who was talking to me about finding a proper husband, I had lost interest. Ever since that day Jasper left I knew that he was the one I would marry. I knew he would come back for me, a wealthy bachelor.
He never came back for me. I was 16 when he left, a tender age when Love surrounded my mind. I knew I had found the one and he left me, in the pouring rain. I am now 19 years and next summer which is in 3 months I will be turning 20. I had been approached by many men, asking me for their hand but I had refused them all waiting for Jasper to return.
“That is why, we have organised Cedric Harley to attend our annual ball in 3 days.” My head snapped around and I looked at my mother in shock.
“Who?” I asked, eagerly awaiting the name.
“Cedric Harley of the Harley estate in London.” I nearly squealed right there and then. Jasper’s estate. Smiling I skipped over to my mother and placed a small kiss on her lips, “Please dear.” She wafted me away. Normally I would have huffed and stormed away but today I simply went back to my window and resumed reading.
Jasper would be coming home as Cedric’s man servant, I had a reason now for looking forward to the ball.
