I Got You

When Melanie Crenshaw got a call from her best friend, Tyler, at an unspeakable time of night, she knew immediately that something was wrong.  They’d always had a connection to each other that gave them the ability to read the other’s emotions without even being together.

“Hmello?”  She mumbled sleepily into the phone.

“Mel?”  Tyler’s teary voice came through the line.

“Ty?”  She asked, sitting up in bed.

“Mel, she broke up with me.”  Tyler whispered and Mel’s heart clenched.  Mostly, she felt awful for her friend.  She knew how in love Tyler was with Penelope Andrews, his girlfriend for the past year and a half.  A smaller, though still prominent, part of Melanie was relieved.  She held a secret deep inside her heart that not even her mind knew yet; she’d been in love with Tyler Williams for a very long time now.

“Okay, Ty.  I’ll be there soon.”  She whispered back before crawling out of bed and grabbing her car keys.  They’d known each other long enough that Melanie didn’t even think about changing from her pajamas before leaving.  She wrote a quick note for her mother in case she woke up before Mel got home and drove the short distance to Tyler’s.

Instead of knocking on the door, Mel took the key from under the welcome mat, careful to put it back after she unlocked the door, and let herself in.  She knew the house like the back of her hand so there was no need to turn the lights on to guide her.  At his door, she took a deep breath, preparing herself for the night ahead.

The door creaking open alerted Tyler to his friends’ presence and he stood, immediately walking to Melanie and wrapping his arms around her waist.  She’d always been tall so he only needed to bend a small bit before resting his head on her shoulder.

Earlier, when he picked up his phone to call for comfort, his male friends never even crossed his mind.  Not only would they most likely ridicule him for being such a girl, but Mel was always there, no matter what.  She was the only woman in his life, besides his Nana of course.  She’d always been the one person he could depend on without worrying about being too needy.  Like now, at three o’clock in the morning, she was in his arms soothing him.

“What did I do wrong?”  He begs to know, feeling the sobs take over his body.

Penelope had been his first love, and he thought she’d be the only.  They were so perfect together.  She laughed at every single one of his jokes, even if it wasn’t funny… well not the dirty ones, but that was okay.  She was short, which he found adorable.  Her bright, naturally blonde hair was cut short around her chin and Tyler always felt like it gave her a cute pixie look.  Penny’s big brown eyes like a doe always managed to catch him off guard when they made contact with his.  She was so beautiful and perfect.

But apparently he wasn’t perfect to her too, because around one o’clock in the morning, she’d called him to say that they couldn’t be together anymore.  When he asked why, she told him that they just weren’t meant to be.  ‘What does that mean, anyways?’  He wondered.

After moving to the bed, Mel allowed Tyler to rest his head against her and he soon fell asleep to the rhythmic rise and fall of her chest.  Melanie was stunned, she knew he’d been crying, but she never expected him to sob like that.  Tyler never sobbed, but she figured he needed to do so in order to feel better.  Despite her confusion, she fell asleep shortly after Tyler began snoring.

A couple hours later, the pair was awoken by a thumping on Tyler’s bedroom door.  “Huh?”  He mumbled, struggling to open his puffy eyes.

Mel ran a hand through his disheveled hair and whispered, “Don’t worry, Ty.  I’ll get it.”  He nodded thankfully and turned to sleep more.
