The Denulir Child

In the quaint human town of London lies an old abandoned church. This church has served as an orphanage for the past forty-four years and has seen many come and go.

But every great story has a tragic beginning.

In the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries, whilst the Witch Hunts were taking place in Salem, a different hunt was taking place in London. The Hunt for the Dark Ones.

The Dark Ones were a species of human, highly developed, that were able to converse with spirits. Not normal spirits, like Clairvoyants would nowadays, and certainly not like the Witches in Salem… instead, the Dark Ones communicated with creatures they called Darklings; Spirits that were sold into darkness. They live in a world called Transit; a place much like our own. Transit however, is grey scale, dreary and mist coats the world - As if the stratosphere is so low the clouds have no choice but to hover close to the ground. The thing about Darklings that scare humans so, is that they look like everyone else… only without faces. They have no eyes, nor mouth, lips, teeth, nose, eye brows, ears, no features at all.

After the 1555 burnings - when entire villages were torn apart when the humans, vulnerable and terrified, turned to accusing the innocent of their own species - specific families took on the roles of the Hunters. Entire families were both drawn together and torn apart at this change in the power.

Eventually, the Dark Ones disappeared, but no-one knows if they had gone into hiding or had all died out…

The abandoned church, since named Willowcrest Orphanage, is where this story begins. Willowcrest is located on the weakest part of the Veil that separates Transit from Earth and it is here, that Darklings thrive, unseen and undisturbed – their only hope is The Denulir Child.
