Chapter 34
A couple of minutes later and the door opened again. My parents bustled in, followed by a grinning Ashton. Rosie pulled away from me slightly, being careful not to hurt me as she sat up on the bed looking at the new arrivals.
As soon as my mom spotted her, she burst into tears again. “Oh God, I’m so glad you’re okay, sweetheart!” she cried as she grabbed Rosie into a bone crushing hug, practically pulling her off of the bed in her haste. “When Ashton called and told us about the fire, I was so worried about you all! How’s DJ? Is he okay?” she asked, her words all slurring into one where she spoke so fast. Her hands were cupping Rosie’s face as she looked at her like she was the most precious thing in the world.
Rosie smiled and nodded. “He’s great, thanks to Nate. He’s sleeping right now.” My mom made a whimper noise and closed her eyes, her whole body seeming to relax. “You can come up and see him later if you want. I’m sure he’d love to see you.”
My mom smiled and nodded eagerly. “I’d love to.” She bent forward and hugged Rosie again, stroking her back. “I can’t believe all this has happened, it’s awful. If you need anything, then you just say and we’re there. You need a place to stay? My clothes wouldn’t fit you with your little waist, but I could ask the girls to sort through some stuff for you to tide you over,” she suggested, pulling back and smiling.
Rosie grinned. “Aww that’s really nice of you Dawn. I don’t have any clothes, but I’ll just borrow from Anna for now, I’m sure she won’t mind,” she said, smiling at Ashton. He nodded in agreement. “And Nate said that we could move in with him,” Rosie added, turning back to grin at me.
My mom gasped, the biggest smile stretching across her face. “You two are moving in together?” she asked happily.
Rosie nodded. “Nate just asked me to m-”
“Rose,” I interjected, shaking my head quickly cutting her off before she could finish that sentence. I needed to speak to DJ before she just went announcing it to everyone that we were engaged. I couldn’t do anything without her little man’s approval, there was a chance that he wouldn’t want me to marry her – I’d have to respect that. She turned back to me, looking at me worriedly. I smiled as I realised that she thought I’d changed my mind. “Remember the two people we spoke about?” I mumbled, trying to explain without giving everything away.
She seemed to breathe a sigh of relief as she bent over and kissed my cheek softly. “Right, yeah. Sorry,” she whispered, obviously catching on to what I meant. She pulled back and smiled down at me tenderly. “I really better go and check on DJ. I’ll come back in a little while and see you,” she promised.
“Give him a kiss from me then,” I instructed. I missed him. I really wished I could go and see with my own eyes that he was okay, but I guess that was impossible considering I couldn’t get out of the bed for a couple of days at least.
“I will. I love you,” she replied, squeezing my hand gently.
“You too, Stripes.” She hugged everyone, before heading out to go and see DJ again.
My mom looked back at me with a hopeful expression on her face. “You two are moving in together? Does that mean I’ll have another grandchild on the way soon?” she asked, raising one eyebrow.
I laughed. “No chance of that happening while I can’t move properly,” I joked, nodding down at my busted legs. She grimaced down at my legs, her chin trembling a little. “I’m fine, Mom. They said it’ll take a while to be back to normal, but I’ll be fine,” I assured her.
She sighed and shook her head. “You have no idea what it’s like to see your child helpless before you and not be able to do anything about it. It’s the most excruciatingly painful thing I’ve ever been through,” she whispered, stroking my arm.
“Actually, I do know what it’s like, and you’re right. It’s the most painful thing I’ve ever been through too,” I replied, shaking my head as I remembered those few seconds when I looked down at DJ and we both knew we were going to die. I would never get that heartbreak out of my head. That feeling of both love and desperation will follow me around for the rest of my days. In those few horrifying seconds, I knew I loved him like a son, because the pain I could see on my mother’s face, the pain that I saw on Rosie’s face when she thought he was dead, that was how I felt then too - like I’d lost my son.
