Chapter Twenty One

I am in a white room. The entire thing is white, the walls, the ceiling, and the floor. There is a figure walking towards me, the light behind them so bright that I cannot see their face. Their frame is small and frail, like a bird’s. As they get closer, I can see that it is a woman.

“Mom?” I hear myself whisper and I see her white teeth shine as she smiles.

She comes to me and grabs my hands, holding them in hers. Hers are warm, comforting, and I never want to let go.

“Happy birthday sweetheart.” She tells me softly and I shake my head.

“Mom… it isn’t my birthday.” she shakes her head still smiling.

“I love you Cameron, and I will be home soon.”

Her words make the tears I hadn’t known form, spill from my eyes and roll down my cheeks, my chest clenching tightly.

“Mom… you aren’t coming-…” she stops me by holding a finger to my lip and smiles.

“Be more careful with yourself sweetheart, stop putting yourself through all this.” She smiles even bigger before pressing a kiss to my cheek. “I will see you again Honey.”

She smiles one more time before her hand slides away from mine and she turns her back to me, taking a few steps toward the bright light.

“Mom, mom no, come back.” I call to her but she continues walking away. I take a few running steps towards her and I try to reach for her, but my hands go right through her now.

“Mom!” I scream, more and more tears running down my cheeks. “Mom please!” my words are sobs now and she disappears into the light. As she disappears the light shuts off like she hit a light switch and I am left in the dark.

“Cameron.” A voice calls but I cannot see anything through the darkness.

The sobs continue to shake my body more vigorously now.

            “Mom.” I sob.

            “Cameron!”

∞

“Cameron!” his voice says, hands gripping my shoulders and shaking me awake.

My eyes fly open and I sit up quickly. My body is wet with a cold sweat and I run my hands though my hair. I rub my face slightly and find my cheeks wet with tears.

“Cameron?” he says softly and I look over my shoulder and find Xander sitting up behind me, watching me worriedly.

“I’m fine.” I tell him, my voice hoarse.

I throw the blankets back and sit on the edge of the bed before standing, running my hands through my hair once more and shutting my eyes.

I turn to him eventually and gesture to the bathroom.

“Is it okay that I take a shower?” I ask him but he just stares at me for a moment and then nods.

I walk to the bathroom before turning on the water and leaning against the counter, looking at myself in the mirror. My skin has become pale and my cheeks are slightly hollow with the lack of food and drugs. There were dark circles under my eyes which were bloodshot and slightly swollen.
