~ Chapter 3 ~
Isabelle
I started walking not knowing where my destination was. I must have looked very weird to people passing by. A young girl aged 17 with a bag on her shoulder walking down the street instead of being in a classroom and glaring at them when they locked eyes with her.
Despite any scowls and glares they showed me, I just rolled my eyes.
I passed a bill board that had the words “K/O championships; join now. Call now!” written on it. Pffttthh like I’d do legal fighting...too much hassle!
I looked over the bill board once more before I realised what I could do to pass the time.
I walked back a few blocks and turned into a dark alleyway. It started to smell of damp urine and crack. This meant I was close...very close. I walked further and didn't look back once. The thing about this route was that my feet knew where they were going which was why I have never had to worry about directions. Once or twice, I walked past drug dealers and they just gave me a look suggesting I buy a roll up. I may be messed up but I would never sink that low, mate! I quickly walked past them; eager to get away.
Before I knew it, I was face to face with a door made of wood that really needed a lick of paint. I knocked on it twice and waited patiently, something that you would never expect from me.
I started tapping my foot to pass the time. I got to 6 before I heard a deep but harsh voice from behind the door say, “Password?”
I thought of the odd phrase that I was taught the first time I visited this place. They said it was my passport to freedom. I never really did understand what that meant but they made it very clear that I should not breathe it to anyone. This was one of the very few promises that I have actually kept.
I cleared my throat once before saying the phrase, “Einstein’s no genius, your mum is,”...What a weird password but whatever floats the big guy’s boat right?
I heard a grunt from behind the door before it opened in front of me. I walked in and was not surprised to find that it hadn’t changed at all. Just like I remembered, it was dim with a few lights on each side of the walls. There was a huge cage and there were two beefy guys fighting as though their lives depended on it.
One of the guys was a friend of mine, Jacob. Everyone here had a fighting name but weirdly enough he didn't but I’ve never questioned it. It’s not my business.
Everyone said Jacob and I looked alike. We shared the same shade of blue in our eyes. Both so icy yet hypnotic at the same time. The only difference was that he had blonde hair while I had a dark brown. He had a six pack; I’d be lying if I said I wasn’t impressed by it. I’m still a girl you know and I must say that his body was to die for but he knew it as well. The cocky prick!
When I first met him, I didn’t bow down to him like the other men here and that’s why he instantly liked me. With my cocky and quick attitude and his “don’t mess with me” persona, we made a pretty good team. But no-one knows that he is really a big softie inside, he just doesn’t show it often. One thing I liked about him in particular was that he never asked any questions and I did the same for him. I liked it like that!
I finally heard a bell ding! To signal the end of the fight. I started to go over to the cage where Jacob was now sitting.
Our greeting was always the same; we always tackled each other but he always seemed to win. Something I really didn’t like!
This time it was no different, I was on the floor with him on top of me before I could even blink. Stupid giant!
“Novia! What a surprise!” he greeted me with a big toothy grin.
Novia...my fighting name. It meant sweetheart in Spanish, kinda crappy if you asked me but I couldn’t complain. It suited me perfectly here. In the ring lots of fighters underestimated me, they thought I was sweet and innocent but I wasn't. I’m far from it actually.
