Hey guys! When you are finished reading I would really appreciate it if you would comment about my story. It's my first one so I want to be sure it's good enough to continue. :) Thanks!
And don't forget to vote if you like it! ******************************************************************************** "Nikki...Nichole...NICK!" someone finally shouted. "Ugh," I groaned. Someone better have a death wish for calling me Nick. As I started to open my eyes, I saw a group of people standing around me. Oh, crap... I did it again didn't I... I started to look at everyone's worried faces and thought 'yep...did it again'. Once people started to realize I was awake, there was a gush of "Are you alright?" "Does anything hurt?" and a bunch of other variations I decided to ignore. "Yes, I'm fine. Can I please have a little breathing room?" I answered back. There was a collective relieved sigh as everyone started to take a step back except for my friend Ruby. As she started to help me up on my feet, she whispered "I'm sorry to tell you at a time like this, but boss wants to see you." I groaned again, and answered back with "'kay..." When I was actually on my feet the rest of the surrounding employees deemed me well enough to leave me with Ruby. "At least you fell here in the lane this time instead of in front of the customers." I chuckled. I work at an upscale restaurant as a waitress, and the lane is what we call the hallway that lead from the kitchens, to the dining room. After a moment of me just standing there and catching my breath, Ruby apologized and said she had to go finish with her tables, and would call me later. I thanked her, and made my way to the boss's office, dreading what I know I'm going to hear. Here is some background information on me: I'm 21 years old, lost both my parents in a car accident, and now I am the guardian of my 16 year old brother, and 14 year old sister. I had to quit school to take care of my siblings, and am currently working three part-time jobs, since nobody seems to be hiring full-time with the way the economy is. On top of these emotional issues, I also have physical issues; the first one being that I am extremely anemic, the other that I have a mild case of asthma. So, now here I am, walking to the boss's office with a severe headache from my dizzy/passing out spell, thinking back to the previous times I passed out. The first one was in the changing room, and the second was in the parking lot after my shift at work. After that point in time, my boss told me that if I did it again, he would have to send me to the disability office because I would be a danger to the customers as well as myself if I were to drop a tray full of knives. When I reached his door, I knocked cautiously, heard a "Come in", and opened the door. As I walked into the office I let go of the breath I was holding. "Hello, Mr. Garabay." "Hello, Nichole. I think you know why you are here, yes?" "Yes." I replied as I sat down in the chair he silently offered as I walked in. Mr. Garabay is an older man in his late 60s but looks like he's in his 40s; mostly because he is in really good shape and eats healthy. He has silver gray hair with silver-blue eyes to match, and he is one of the kindest men I know. "Nichole," he started out, seeming to think of his words carefully, "I know you don't want to go on disability, but I can't have you here putting yourself and others in danger." Heck no, I don't want to go on disability! No offense to those who are, but I have my pride to think of. I've been watching over my siblings, working 3 part-time jobs for almost a year and a half. I CAN take care of myself, and brother and sister without anyone's help. Mr. Garabay seemed to be thinking to himself as I was ranting to myself in my mind. After a few moments of silence he straightened up and almost literally looked like a light bulb went off in his head. "Wait a second..." he said as he picked up the phone and started dialing. After a moment I could hear a muffled greeting on the other end of the line. "Yes, can I speak with John please, this is his cousin." When another moment went by, I heard a different muffled response. "Hey John, nice of you to take my call." Pause. "Yes, I'm fine. No, nothing's wrong." Pause "Well I remembered you saying the last time we met up that you need another secretary. Is the position still open?"
