Ten Kisses

Sigmund Freud says the human mind has six self defense mechanisms. Repression, projection, displacement, reaction formula, regression, and denial.

Lily Evans is very familiar of these, especially of denial, repression, reaction formula (which is like an extreme form of denial, for lack of simpler definition). Denial that James Potter really may not be all that bad, repression of the oh-so-horrid chills she gets down her spine when he touches her. Her violent reaction whenever anyone even mentions that maybe she might like him back.

And it was her full belief that James was familiar with projection, displacement, and regression. He tried to project his silly adolescent feelings unto to her, as if she was the least bit interested, and when she turned him down, he would regress into an annoying childlike state. Or, in her opinion, his normal state. And displacement.

The only displacement she could think of in this moment, was that he somehow displaced his lips on hers. In a crowded hallway. And for some other unknown reason, she had yet to push him off.

Until someone bumped into him, and she practiced her own form of displacement, as in displacing her from her side and across his face.

"What were you thinking, kissing me like that!"

"That wasn't the reaction I was hoping for." he muttered, holding his hand up to his face. That would sting for awhile.

"I cannot believe you. Just grabbing me and kissing me that way. Out of nowhere." she said incredulously. The nerve of him. She could kill him. Or maybe turn him into the headmaster for sexual harassment.

"I know what you're thinking, and it isn't harassment if it wasn't unwanted." James said suddenly.

"It was unwanted!"

"So why'd you kiss me back."

"I didn't know it was you. Boys normally don't just come up and kiss me in hallways." she snapped.

"You loved it."

"It was the worst kiss I've ever had in my life." she said primly, turning away from him, walking down the hall.

"The worst. Then I can't wait to see how you respond to the best."

"You won't be finding out, I'm not repeating what just happened." she scorned, sending him a look of pure venom over her shoulder.

"Lily-wait up." he said, reaching out and grabbing her wrist, causing her to fly around nearly falling. He put his hands on her shoulders to balance her, and she pushed them away, glaring at him.

"What? You've already put me through enough today."

"I want to make a little wager with you."

She lifted an eyebrow. Wager? That was never good. James didn't really live life playing by the rules.

"What sort of wager? You know I don't like these kind of things." she asked warily.

"About kissing you. I want to make a bet, that I can kiss you again."

"Ha, not likely. Not without being thrown out of school for molesting me."

"No, kiss you, and have you kiss me back."

Lily laughed, the idea was hilarious. Her? Kiss him?

"Keep living in a dream Potter. It's all you have."
