Chapter 22 - Halfway There

Lea was slowly coming to terms with the story she’d heard (about Michael) from Ellie. She hated the fact that she’d assumed him a hard, and cruel, careless person. Really, he was the complete opposite. Naturally, he was an utter idiot for coming to meet her under the circumstances, but who blamed him for wanting something better for himself. She couldn’t wait to see him again, to talk to him and apologise, give him a second chance. She hoped he’d be back soon, and Harry would be coming to visit this weekend. She couldn’t wait to see him again, it’d been so long since she’d last seen him.

‘Mornin’ Lea,” Ellie came in cheerfully with a tray of tea and treats, “Fine mornin’ t’day”

“What’s with the accent, El? Drop it, please,” Lea stifled a giggle,

“Nu’in, I’m perfectly normal. I always tawk laik this,”

Lea burst out into an uncontrollable fit of giggles,

“Ellie, c’mon. Who ya think ya fooling?”

Ellie rolled her eyes,  and joined Lea in giggling. Which as you can only guess didn’t end all to soon. The two battled to compose themselves into a normal state again.

“What’s the exciting news then?” Lea asked enthusiastically, once they’d calmed down and their stomachs were no longer in spasm.

“Nothing,” Ellie answered matter-of-factly,

“Don’t LIE,  I’ve known you since before I could walk. Spill it  . . . “ Lea commanded.

“I am wed now half a year, Lea. Can you believe it.”

“Wow. That’s incredible, but still – what’s the good news?”

“Well. We’re hosting a dinner on the weekend,” Ellie was literally beaming.

“You’re kidding right?” Lea asked, questioningly.

“NEVER, Harry is to be there, Michael too. All our close friends, it’ll be so lovely, oh Lea , I am so excited.”

“Sounds great,”

Lea was actually somehow not looking forward to this. She’d notice how Harry was so possessive, and jealous. He definitely wasn’t going to take kindly to Michael being there. He’d seen firsthand the pain that he’d caused Lea. If she knew Harry at all, he’d at the very least be completely rude, and ignorant towards Michael, at the very most he’d initiate a fist fight that would possibly continue to unnecessary measures of violence. She cringed at the thought.

“What’s wrong?” Ellie asked, interrupting her thoughts.

“Nothing,” Lea didn’t want to put Ellie out of her excitement.

“Sure?” Ellie gave Lea  a curious glance.

Lea smiled, and nodded. She racked her brain of every possible way to keep the two as far away from each other as possible. Maybe she should return home early? Maybe Michael won’t be back? Maybe Harry will be to involved at his college to make it? Her mind raced over all possibilities.

She looked up to notice Ellie glancing at her expectantly

“It’s Harry and Michael isn’t it?” Ellie repeated

“Maybe,” Lea shrugged. “Just wondering how they’ll behave around each other,”

“I’m sure it’ll be fine.”

“Ellie. C’mon you know Harry. He saw how Michael hurt me. What do you think he’s going do when recognises him? “

“I know what you’re saying, but he needs to learn to behave himself, and don’t think I’m joking. I will kick him out of my house if he so much as says a word against Michael.”

“Okay,” Lea finally succumbed. What more could she say? Ellie was right, they couldn’t just keep him completely out of harm’s way at all times, he would be escorted out if he got out of hand. As long as he didn’t drink, Lea knew it should be fine. Alcohol always seemed to make him lose control of himself. She’d just need to keep a very strict watch over him. She smiled to herself, she’d always been like kind of a mother to him. Looking out for him at every occasion.

It was now Friday, both Harry, and Michael would be arriving the next morning. Ellie and Lea had spent the week in preparation, planning a menu, and designing the table décor. They got a bit carried away with it as one might very well guess, and before they knew it , everything was seen to, and there was nothing for them to do but just sit still a while, when they were summoned by the doorbell. Ellie rose to answer the front door.

“What are you doing here?” Ellie’s face was surprised.

“Surprise,” the voice said questioningly,

“You can say that again,” Ellie was flustered.

Lea knew that voice all to well, and all that came to her mind was the exact same question that Ellie had asked upon opening the door.

“What the hell are you doing here?” She asked, not sure whether to be excited, happy , worried  or angry

“Well, I needed to talk to you, besides Dad wanted me to check up on you,” her brother, Daniel stared down at her.

“Bastard,” she muttered under her breath,

“I heard that,” he retorted.

“You were meant to,” She rolled her eyes, “Let me show you to a room,” she lead the way down the passage.

Once he’d settled, Lea went down to the parlour and waited for someone to grace her with company. She was staring emptily into the fire when Daniel came in.

“Lea,”

She looked up, dazed, “Yea?” she asked, still in a faraway place,

“There’s something I need to talk to you about.”

“If it’s about me getting married you can just go and…”

“No , Lea. It’s NOT. Just relax okay. It’s nothing like that. Something happened at home …”

“Something . What?” panic rose to her voice,

“Something bad. I didn’t want you to find out by note, Lea. I wanted to tell you in person,”

“Please tell me the Heights is still standing?” Lea almost burst into tears.

“Yes, It’s still doing fine. It’s about Dad, Lea.”

“What about him?” She looked up, genuinely concerned, “Is he sick?”

“Lea – We should have probably told you sooner, but. . .”
