"How did you enjoy soccer practice?" Seth asks.

"I made some new friends. I like Coach Nate."  Danny responds.

I like him more. Ugh, what am I thinking? Seth questions.

“How about you Caleb?”

“I like it. It was fun. I like Coach Nate too.”

"So what did ya’ll do today? "

"We got to know each other and then we ran some laps." Danny responds.

Nate heads home disappointed at just catching a glimpse of Danny’s dad.

Doesn’t she have a husband. I was close to meeting him, but no she had to keep flirting and no attempts of mine got her off. Nate thinks exasperatedly.

He dislikes her, but he won’t treat her child any different.  After all it isn’t the child’s fault his mother is the way she is.

As soon as he sits down to dinner, Nate’s phone rings.

“Hello”

“Hi, dear brother, how are you?” Scarlett asks enthusiastically.

“Good, what’s going on?”

“I can’t call you just to know how you’re doing?”

“Nope, so what news do you have?”

“None, I’m just in a really good mood. I do want to know how your boyfriend is though.” He imagines her with her innocent look.

“Scarlett, you know I don’t have one.”

“Sure, sure.”

“Well, I don’t.”

“We know that you’re interested in someone or you wouldn’t have spaced out so much. You know what I’m talking about.”

Of course she had noticed the difference in my exercise routine. I shouldn’t have taken her with me. She can read me perfectly. I couldn’t hide my excitement as we  got nearer to the park and my disappointment when we went by their place and they weren't there.

“So how’s school and the search going?”

“Changing the subject, I see, but no matter. School is great and the search is going. No results yet.” Her voice loses some of the excitement towards the end.

“I’m sure there will be some soon.”

Flashback

Nate can tell Scarlett has something to tell him, but she keeps avoiding it. He doesn’t want to pressure her, so he waits for her.

“I’m glad you seem better. How is school going? Making any friends? Did it seem overwhelming? How are--”

“Hey! Slow down with the questions. Everything is great. I like my roommate. She has been really helpful and as for other friends. I have gotten to know my floormates. It feels like a big family there and we’ve helped each other, but I do have something to tell you…”

Did something happen? Nate thinks.

“Hey, it’s nothing bad...I want to know what happened with my baby, so I am looking into hiring a private detective.”

I was waiting for this. I could see the longing she has in her eyes every time we see a child with his/her mother.

“I’m glad you are taking the step. I knew you would. And I’ll help you in any way I can.”

“Thank you.”

“Have you found a private detective.”

“Yes, I will be calling him when I get back.”

***

“Yeah.” Scarlett responds.

“So what else did you have to tell me?”

“Nothing, I just felt like talking to you.”

“Okay, well anytime you want to you know I’m here.  Are you planning to come for spring break?”

“Yup, I’ll be there. I’ll even go to a game of yours if there’s one.”

“There will be one if we win.”

“Okay, got to go to class. Love you!”

“Love you, take care.”

He is proud of how confident she has become and her more positive outlook in life. He had been worried about her going away for college, but it is what she needs; a new place to start over. He couldn’t help, but worry of the possibility of her relapsing if she lost hope of finding her son. There is the possibility of it taking years if they were lucky to find him as a result of how she had given him up.  Breaking out of his thoughts he decides to go for a run. He doesn’t want to keep thinking negatively.
