Words Left Unspoken

Melanie Jane-Anthony peered through her thick-rimmed glasses at her tall figure reflecting across her room’s full-length mirror. She tilted her head to the side and pouted, not feeling fully content with her choice of attire.

She was wearing cloudy grey trousers that hugged her frame perfectly, a white shirt, and a light baby-pink jacket to complete her look. Elegant.

Unfortunately, ‘elegance’ was indeed not how her fellow schoolmates decide to dress-up in one of their famous backyard parties-such as the one Melanie was currently heading to.

“Oh well, guess this’ll just have to do….” She thought to herself, before grabbing her tiny purse and heading out the door.

Once she had reached the bottom of her mansion’s long staircase, her trusty butler-Harold- accompanied her. When reaching her limo, she greeted her chauffer with a polite smile and a brief nod.

Yes. Indeed Melanie Jane-Anthony was rich. Filthy rich, I must add, and so was every other teenager in the backyard party she was on her way to. However, being ‘filthy rich’ did not get her popularity. No.

As a result of her friendly manner and smart personality – Melanie was labeled as a dork. A nerd. A weirdo. A freak. A goody-two shoe. However you may call it, the point was that Melanie never quite ‘fitted in’ with her fellow school classmates. She was always the odd one out. The-as they say-fish out of water.

With a heavy sigh, she lent her head against the windowsill. Her mother –who was seated right next to her-frowned at that. “Melanie darling, will you STOP looking so gloomy? Your ruining my party mood…” she grumbled distastefully.

Melanie took one look at her beautiful, and fabulously dressed, mother. She gave a weak smile, and then lent her head back against the limo’s cold windowsill.

Her mother, frowning even harder now, started hurriedly thinking of ways to cheer her only daughter up. An idea popped in her head.  She brightly grinned at her daughter teasingly. “ I bet that Jeremy boy will be there….” She beamed, nudging her daughter playfully.

Upon hearing the oh-so familiar name, Melanie eyes turned into saucers. She stood a little straighter and turned her head away from her mother, at an attempt to hide her growing blush.

  Jeremy Fitzgerald.

As cliché as this may sound, he was the most popular gentleman in her school. Literally every girl fancied him. Including Melanie. However, the only difference between Melanie and all the other girls was that she never spoke to him directly. Nor did she ever attempt to flirt. She just kept her distance-the way she always has, knowing deeply that she would never have a chance with him.

How her mother seemingly knew she fancied him was easy. Every parent knew their daughter was crushing on Jeremy Fitzgerald. This of course, raised his-and his mother’s- ego greatly.

About 10 minutes later, the limo reached to a brief halt outside the backdoor of Charlotte Melvin’s backyard party. Their butler opened the door for Melanie and her mother, before getting back in the car himself. With that, Harold and Paul headed back to her mansion. It was now only Melanie, her mother, and her bodyguard- Tom.

Only some had bodyguards like Melanie. Others brought along their butlers, or maids. Why, you ask, was this action necessary? Melanie never knew. It was just the rules all the parents instructed, so she basically just went along with it-as did every other teenager she knew.

Once she stepped inside the party, Melanie raised both her eyebrows, seemingly confused. “The term ‘backyard’ wasn’t proper….” She thought to herself. And indeed the ‘backyard’ looked more like a huge park.

After greeting Charlotte Melvin-the host- as well as some of her mother’s friends, Melanie turned to her mother. Her mother kissed her forehead in a loving manner, before heading off to the large ‘Gazebo’ at the far left, where all the parents sat to gossip and have a cup of tea, leaving her standing alone with her bodyguard Tom.
