When she woke, Ella was in a marvelously lavish room. She was lying in a lush canopy bed fit for a king. The walls were covered with intricate tapestries. When Ella looked closer at the tapestries, the pictures seemed to shimmer and move, but Ella shot it off as just another hallucination. Ella noticed a tray on one of the tables across the room. She ran over to it and scarfed down the food and water. When she finished, she wiped her mouth with the napkin and sat down in the nearest chair. She felt replenished and rejuvenated.
She looked around the room again and her eyes settled on the wardrobe. Sticking out of one of the doors was a vibrant fabric. Ella looked down at her own dress and saw it was tattered and dirty. She moved over to the wardrobe and pulled open the doors. Ella could have sworn she had heard a gasp when the doors opened. The wardrobe was filled with gorgeous, extravagant dresses. She pulled out a beautiful emerald green. It had a wonderful green corset and flowing skirt. Ella found the matching shoes and slipped them on. She closed the wardrobe doors and admired her appearance. She twirled a few times and smiled.
“You look darling, sweetheart. Honestly! Prince’ll love you in it!” Ella jumped when she heard the voice. She turned around to try and locate where it had come from, but she didn’t see anyone.
“I’m over here, darling,” the voice said again. Ella spun around, the person sounded as though it were right behind her. It was definitely a woman’s voice.
“Where are you?” Ella asked.
“I’m right here, right in front of you. I’m the wardrobe,” Ella took a step back.
“If you are, prove it,” Ella said. Ella saw the door handle jiggle a bit and she giggled. She reached out to touch the handle and accidentally brushed the wardrobe’s door.
“Oh! That tickled!” The wardrobe shook a bit and the voice chuckled. Ella saw eyes open out of the wood work. The flourishes decorating the top of the wardrobe turned into a smiling pair of lips.
“I forgive you, darling. It happens all the time, well… When I say ‘all the time’… We don’t get many visitors here, and Prince never comes in here anymore. Not after… And I can’t even fit through the door! Otherwise I’d be out of here; I’d like to go to France…” The wardrobe trailed off. She had a very elegant voice and Ella noted that she sounded chirpy but sad. She seemed to trail off often.
“Why are you a wardrobe and who is Prince?” Ella asked. She was very confused and would like some answers.
“Oh, that’s not important, dear. Let’s get off this dreary subject and get you dressed!” The wardrobe opened her doors to reveal many beautiful dresses.
“Dressed for what, may I ask?”
“Supper of course!” Suddenly, a few birds flew into the room. They swarmed into the wardrobe and poked about. The wardrobe was giggling the whole time. When the birds resurfaced, they had selected a beautiful sapphire dress. It was a simple skirt, but the corset was beautiful and very intricate. They swarmed about her and fitted the dress onto her. Ella wondered how they could do all this without hands.
When the birds left, just as suddenly as they had come, Ella was faced with a mirror. She looked herself up and down, she barely looked 14 anymore! She looked like one of the older girls she often saw in the village.
“You look beautiful darling! He will find you absolutely stunning!” The wardrobe was smiling gleefully.
“Wait, who? Who will find me stunning?” Ella asked.
“Why, Prince of course!” The wardrobe answered. With that, there was a scratch at the door. Ella walked over to the door, took a deep breath and opened it. She immediately jumped back. A giant black leopard was standing in the doorway. Ella ran behind one of the chairs and crouched down.
“There’s no need to be afraid of me! I’m really quite nice,” The leopard could speak too! Talking furniture, now talking animals… Ella wondered just what this place really was. She stepped hesitantly out from behind the chair and approached the leopard.
