They say that a life is priceless. I say my life is worthless. I've been called that countless of times... So many times that I'm finally starting to believe it.
Don't get me wrong; fortunately, I do have people that love and look after me. Some of them of them are my best friends, and roommates at the orphanage where I live, along with forty-nine other orphans. The other person that loves me is the undertaker of the orphanage, Miss Shay. She is the sweetest person I have ever met. She is so understanding and doesn't judge anyone for anything. Also, she is amazingly beautiful and it's a wonder that she isn't married yet.
I used to have a family that loved me, also, but not anymore. I have thought about that faithful day where my happiness was taken away from me, even though I have no memory of that. From Miss Shay's pretty good storytelling and articles that I've read online, I have come up with a conclusion of what probably happened one day.
It all started on a sunny morning. Greg and Sandy Portman were happily cruising around the countryside of Lakeshore in their blue minivan. Their sweet, adorable 8-month- old baby, Cat, was with them, giggling and smiling.
Their happy montage was interrupted by a police siren. Greg, who always had respect for everyone, pulled over to the side of the road to let the cop car go by. But, it unexpectedly pulled over right behind the minivan. Greg and Sandy were confused, while Cat was kept on laughing, because she had no clue what was going on.
The policeman got out of his car, and walked over to the driver’s side the the minivan, where Greg was seated. Greg was more confused than ever. He and Sandy shared a confused glance.
Greg said, "Is there a problem officer?”
The officer replied, "Don’t fool around. You know perfectly well what you did.”
“Sir, I have no idea what you are talking about,” said Greg.
“Mr. and Mrs. Portman?” The young couple nodded.
“I’m going to have to ask you to step out of the vehicle.” The officer looked at the couple. “Now.”
“Greg,” Sandy whispered.
“We have to do what the man says, honey.”
Sandy didn’t know what would happen next, so she said these words: “I love you, Greg.”
“I love you too, Sandy.”
The officer stepped aside to let Greg out of the minivan.
When Sandy and Greg were out of the vehicle, Sandy suddenly remembered the baby.
“Officer, we have a baby in the car. We can’t leave her alone!”
The officer looked at Sandy, then said some words into his walkie-talkie. He then turned to the couple.
“She will be taken care of.”
Sandy gripped Greg’s hand. “What will happen to her? Officer, I don’t understand what’s going on."
The officer had a look of annoyance on his face.
“Put your hands behind your back. Both of you.”
Sandy unwillingly let go of Greg’s hand, and started to put her hands behind her back. Before she did, Greg grabbed her hand and kissed it. They both did what they were told.
Both Sandy and Greg had tears in their eyes, for they were both worried about their only child. In one swift motion, the officer handcuffed both of them.
“Greg and Sandy Portman, you are under arrest for the murder of Suzie Hamilton.”
Greg and Sandy were taken aback. Sandy had tears rolling down her face. She drew in a shaky breath and spoke. “Officer, what are you talking about? We didn’t do anything! And what about our baby?!”
“That’s what they all say. ‘We didn’t do anything!’ Your child will be put in a local orphanage.”
“Anything you say or do can and will be held against you in a court of law. You have the right to remain silent.”
Greg and Sandy didn’t make a sound after that. They were still filled with worry for their child.
The cop led them into the police car, and they got in and sped off, leaving their precious baby behind.
