Chapter Two: Turning Tables
The story about James and Alicia is tragic. Having been married for not even six months Alicia died in a car accident. So for Mckenzie to be in her brothers arms was the most comforting thing anybody could give her.
Now they were sitting on the sofa, half asleep with Phoebe licking James’ face.
“James, who told you?” Mckenzie asked whilst chocking down the rest of her red wine.
“Mckenzie, that’s your third glass, I don’t think you should be drinking anymore. Maybe go to be bed and we can talk about this in the morning.” Dropping her head back, Mckenzie grumbled and flopped her free hand about at him.
“Who needs sleep? I mean, what’s the point in it?” James who was only on his first bottle of beer, and completely aware of everything that was going on, lifted Phoebe of his lap and went to go and pick up his younger sister, Mckenzie. He moved her into the other room and placed her softly on her bed.
The first night was always the hardest. Even with the amount of alcohol Mckenzie had consumed, she couldn’t bring herself to sleep knowing the person you relied on, the person you depended on, the one you trusted the most, was gone, just like that, forever. Everything seemed a blur, so surreal. How could this have happened?
The pain, it was unbearable, her thoughts were incompatible, and nothing made sense now that he was gone. Not anymore.
Lifting her heavy head and moving her aching limbs out of their room and into the cluttered kitchen. Trying to move as quickly and swiftly and possible as James had dozed off on the sofa, less that ten feet away.
