Chapter 8: I Need You Now
I closed the door behind Marcus, reluctantly, and turned to face my disgruntled daughter. She was glaring at me, her arms folded, with her lower lip jutting out.
"Mama, why did he have to leave?" Cara demanded.
I sighed, wearily and knelt down in front of her. "Baby, daddy's coming home soon and Marcus can't be here." I explained in the simplest way possible to my four year old.
"Daddy...." I paused, thinking of the best way to say that Daddy would fly into a jealous rage and beat me to within an inch of my life. "Daddy would just be angry." yea that works. "Come on baby, you need to go clean up your room and I need to make dinner okay?" I ushered Cara into her bedroom then I headed back to the kitchen to make pasta.
I had just put plates, piled high with spaghetti, on the table and Cara had just settled into her seat when the door opened, and Nicky walked in.
"Hello, angel!" he said, loosening his tie and kissing me softly on the cheek. "hello, cupcake!" he kissed the top of Cara's head.
"Hi daddy, how come your home early?" Cara asked as Nicky sat down and pulled his plate toward him.
"Well, my boss left early so we all decided to take a half day since our boss wasn't there anyway." Nicky shoveled a forkful of pasta in his mouth. "So how was your day angel?"
I gulped, quickly trying to make up a reasonable lie. "Well..Cara and I watched some tv and then we played barbies, right baby?" I glanced at Cara and pleaded with my eyes that she would go a long with what I said.
"Yea, and we played make overs," Cara chirped playing with her food. My eyes widened slightly.
"Cara, baby, don't play with your food, you know daddy doesn't like that," I admonished hurriedly as Nicky's eyes narrowed at Cara.
Cara looked down at the table, "Sorry, mommy," she mumbled Nicky's fist clenched around his fork. He opened his mouth to say something but I quickly interrupted him, knowing that he would probably hit me for it later.
"Cara, don't mumble like that, it's impolite," I scolded gently. "Eat." I said as she stared at me. The rest of the dinner was silent and when we were done I sent cara off to watch tv while I did the dishes.
Nicky came up behind me and wrapped his arms around my waist. I flinched slightly. "I'm glad to see you've listened to everything I've taught you, angel." Nicky said, kissing the nape of my neck softly.
"What do you mean?" I asked.
"You know the only reason I have ever hurt you was because you weren't doing what you were supposed to. I'm glad that your teaching Cara to behave like a proper lady." I breathed a sigh of relief. He wasn't mad at her. "However," he continued, his arms tightening around me. "Don't ever interrupt me again!" he hissed. He punched my side hard, surely leaving a small bruise, before leaving to watch tv with Cara.
I swallowed nervously trying to breathe. Nicky was getting worse and I'm scared that he'll lash out at our daughter and hurt her..
I closed my eyes tightly, willing my self not to cry. Once I relaxed a bit, I finished the dishes and then I headed to my room, telling Nicky I was going to have a short nap. I close the door behind me and then reached for my phone, hoping that texting Marcus would make me feel better. There was something about him that made me want to trust him, like he understood what I was going through. If I ever found the strength to get away from Nicky, Marcus would be the man for me.
I went back home after leaving Charlotte's. I was annoyed that Nicholas had to come home early because he cut into the time I was spending the girls. I really enjoyed hanging out Charlotte and Cara and I really hoped that I could see them soon.
I grabbed a soda from the fridge and collapsed onto my couch. Brooke would've loved Charlotte if she was still alive, and she would've been head over heels for Cara. I think Cara would've loved to play with my nephew...I held back tears as I thought about my sister and my nephew whom I would never know. That bastard is lucky he's locked away or I would kill him!
I looked down, shocked, when I heard a crack and felt something wet pour into my lap. I had burst my soda while I was lost in thought. I cursed and flung the broken can into the garbage, then I headed into my room to change. I might as well change into my work clothes now. I threw on my standard bar tending outfit; a black button down with the sleeves rolled up and a pair of dark wash jeans with comfortable shoes. I really needed to find a more solid job, I thought as I put on my watch, I couldn't stay in this crappy apartment forever.
