Chapter 1 - It's Always Darkest Before the Dawn
_____________________________________________________________________________
Regrets collect like old friends
Here to relive your darkest moments
I can see no way, I can see no way
And all of the ghouls come out to play
And every demon wants his pound of flesh
But I like to keep some things to myself
I like to keep my issues strong
It's always darkest before the dawn

I woke up in a cold sweat, gasping for breath. The sheets clung to my damp skin, soaked with my sweat. "It was just a dream," I whispered to myself. My heart beat was running as fast as a train, thudding so hard it threatened to break through my chest. Placing my arms on my head, I closed my eyes and concentrated on breathing. Slowly, my systems started starting up, one by one. When I could see clear enough, I stepped from my bed down to the cold, hard concrete floor. The sensation sent invigorating stems of refreshing coolness up my spine. I padded silently to the window, and brushing aside the dusty, old curtain, I could see the faint tinges of pink across the monochrome sky. Leaning against the windowsill, I watched the long arms of the sun reach up and embrace the sky, coloring everything it touched in a pink that rivaled no other. The arms reached around the metallic buildings, setting them afire with scarlet and orange. I reached for the frozen coffee on my windowsill, still half full from the previous night. Shivering, I wrapped my warm hands around the cold cup. Taking a sip, I enjoyed the feeling of the icy, bitter liquid sliding down my throat. The sky was aflame with the sun's rays, the long tendrils enveloping everything they came into contact with, changing them from gray to a flaming scarlet. A drowsy smile filled my face as I felt the cold caffeine taking effect.
It was a new day, and that was all that mattered.

Hello! I know this chapter was SUPER SUPER SUPPPPPERRRRR short, but hey, I'm a busy girl. I wanted to just see how people like it before I write more. Don't worry, there WILL be an actual story line to this, don't worry. I just wanted to set a scene of Deryn waking up after a nightmare (the intro chapt.)
Please rate and comment, critiques are much appreciated!
Thank you!
