The gravel road crunched under my boots as I walked up the driveway and shielded my eyes from the harsh light. We were going to leave this place soon, we couldn't afford to stay long. We couldn't risk it, not again. In a way I still blamed myself for all the lives we had lost last time. Robert told me I should just get over it, but I couldn't. It still haunted me every night. The screams and looks of horror everyone had on their faces. Zombies, are just a pain in the fucken asshole. That pretty much sums it up. Everyone used to think it would be cool to have zombies take over. You could kill them freely, and it would be fun just like it was on video games. That little dream, was as total lie. Imagine having to see people die. Devour each other, literally. There was nothing "fun" about it. Sure sometimes after a kill you would get this weird sense of accomplishment. You'd feel powerful. Strong. As if no one could hurt you.

That's how I used to feel. At first I took pleasure in killing off zombies. Trying to get the greatest kill and prove that I was boss, but I'm tired of it. The running, the hiding, the fighting to survive. All of it was just draining.

Life of course moves on and so do people. Right now, we're on our way to Vegas. We stopped at an abandoned motel, not far from the city. No one will admit it but were all on edge. What will happen once we get to the city? Will we find any people there, or will they all be dead, mindless creatures? Robert, Rick,  and my brothers went ahead to scout the place out. As for Dianne, she's getting along well. She's due soon, at least we think she is. She's gotten really HUGE! I know I said that last time but this time I mean it, I believe I would even fit in her belly!

Another recent thing that had happened was the Robert had finally told me why they took forever to come back. He had taken a detour to a store to buy something, a special gift that he later revealed to me.

I twirled the ring on my finger around twice and then heard the sound of footsteps behind me. Joe smiled at me crookedly and looked down at the floor as he came to stand by my side. He fidgeted slighty with his jacket and then stood still by my side. He cleared his throat and I looked at him out of the corner of my eye.

"what's up?" I finally asked after about a minute of awkward silence.

"Before this whole world turned to shit, I remember hearing about an army base that wasn't that far from where we are. It's supposed to be near the entrance to Las Vegas." he muttered. I nodded and then bit my lip. Would it be worth checking out? Who knew, we would only knew once we tried it out. Then again it might just be a pile of rubble like all the other army bases we had passed on our way. Some of them had useful things. We had found a truck with an RPG in the back, and of course the boys had wanted it as soon as they saw it. Stephen had fallen in love with it and was currently trying to get it to work. With the help of Mark's sister we had gotten it to work a little. I was surprised when they decided to stay with us, but then they didn't have anywhere else to go. The world was now a scary, lonely place. Well it had always been like that, but you didn't run the risk of getting eaten walking alone in the streets like you did now. I knew they secretly blamed me for Marks death. Hell, I did too!

"Thanks for sharing that." I replied and added thoughtfully "I'll tell the guys when they get back."

He nodded and then stood there awkwardly for another minute before walking off. I chuckled to myself and still couldn't believe that a guy like that would end up with someone like Sam! Hey, I wasn't judging. With the risk of possibly dying all the time at present, well you had to get some lovin. He wasn't even that bad to look at, I could just see that everything that had happened lately had left him shook up. We were all shaken up, but in a way it seemed to have hit him harder.

I walked back towards the front of the building and looked up at the sun. The way it was positioned indicated that it was already past noon, they should be back in a little. I heard the snort of Crossbone and looked over to the truck we had put her in. Why would we keep a horse you ask? She was a part of our family...sadly the other farm animals we had we used them for food. It was completely necessary and we did it as quickly and painlessly as we possibly could have.

"What's the matter girl?" I asked and walked towards her truck. I stroked her hair and put my forehead against hers. I had to stand on my tippy toes but this gesture that was so familiar calmed her. I heard a shuffling noise coming from behind me and didn't even hesitate. I knew that when Crossbone began to act up there was danger nearby. Her senses helped us when we didn't have Rick nearby. Sam would probably realize what was happening and come out right now. I turned around and saw one zombie slowly inching towards us. It's arm was practically disconnected from it's body. It was hanging off by little pieces of flesh and tendon. I turned my head to the side slightly disgusted and fascinate with the sight of it. How could the arm still stay on it? I just shrugged off my curiosity and slung my crossbow to the front of me to aim. Even though we had also found some more guns and ammo at the other base I wanted to stay with my crossbow. It was quieter and still got it's work done. I didn't want to draw attention and possibly risk our safety. I fired quickly and chuckled a little when I saw how the arrow shot. It made the zombies head whip backwards and blood shot out, the zombie then slowly fell backwards.

I grimaced and then walked towards the zombie. I looked into the face of the zombie and realize it was a girl. She looked as if maybe she used to be pretty. How could I tell? Well, there was just something about her bone structure. Now, I'm just rambling. I pulled the arrow out and straightened up. Just then I heard someone scream a warning. I looked up and stumbled slightly backwards trying to reload the crossbow. There were two more zombies slowly making there way to me. Why hadn't I heard them?

"Fuck," I muttered under my breath. One disadvantage of using the crossbow; it took forever to reload.

Just then a shape appeared out of no where and tackled one of the zombies. I heard a snap and I knew Sam was at work. The other zombie was making its way towards me and I shot it down. I heard Sam chuckling and then turned to see her walking towards me with a little jump in her step. Sam wasn't really that upset over what she had become. In fact, she thought it was actually cool to have the powers she did. I was still puzzled about how she caught it just by eating something. That was...unrealistic I guess.

"You have to pay attention love." Sam said as she put her arm around me.

"I know, I'm sorry." I replied and then quickly put my hands to my temples. Lately I had been getting constant head aches. I got them daily and they always hurt like a mother.

"Another head ache?" she asked me concerned.

"How did you know?" I asked.

"I'm not stupid, you do that temple rub thingy at least 7 times a day now." she replied.

"Yeah, it's another head ache." I admitted.

"You should ask Joe to look into that, it might be something serious."

"Now that's just ridiculous, everyone gets head aches every now and then."

"Okay, if you say so." Sam muttered.

She turned around to leave but then I caught her arm.

"I just don't want people to worry." I said softly. I didn't want her to get upset over this. She just nodded and then smiled, that meant there was no fight to be had.

I heard the steady rumble and my lips quirked upwards. My boys were coming back.
