~Chapter 1~

The more than ten hour bus ride was treacherous. Ryann Dawson was finally leaving her home town of Virginia Beach. The bus was the cheapest ride she could find into the city. Going by plane would be faster but she would have no money left over, and Ryann had to save every bit of money that she had saved up. She slouched back and perched up her knees on the back of the seat in front of her. The ride was incredibly bumpy and she did her best to gain some sort of comfort. A man looked over to her and she started being self conscience about what she had on. She looked almost homeless, wearing rather large clothing. Her worn out jeans, were just a bit too long and her large t-shirt was torn at the arm and was a bit too big. Over that she wore a hooded sweatshirt which marked the date 98 on the back. Her ebonized, kinky hair was tied back into a tight pony tail revealing her beautiful green-blue eyes, and her rounded face. Ryann was definitely not your average twenty -one year old. Most would be celebrating by going to clubs and partying, or checking their facebook accounts ten times daily. But Ryann had bigger dreams in mind. She planned on someday writing her own poetry books or to teach to children or perhaps one day create her own business.  And what better place than New York to make that dream a reality.

“Wow, so this is it?” Ryann said looking out at the window at all the bright lights. They had arrived at the bus station. She was in awe at how bright it could be when it was already nine o’clock at night. So bright you couldn’t even see the stars in the sky, just buildings as tall as the eye can see.

“This is where you get off folks.” The driver called out into the speaker. The bus had stopped only a few blocks from the nearest motel. She put on her back pack, her only luggage, and set off into a new life.  She checked herself in for two nights at the grungy looking front desk, and went up to her room. On her way up to the room she grabbed the daily news paper. She jammed the key card in and the door opened revealing a colorful looking double bed and two awkwardly shaped pillows rested against the head board. There was a couch and another door at the end of the room. She walked in slowly and felt the floor board creek underneath her feet. It felt a bit creepy but it would have to do for now.

Ryann placed her back pack on the bed and sat at the edge of it. She immediately opened up the newspaper taking out a pen from the front pocket of her bag to circle the apartments that were for rent with roommates and also available jobs in the area. As she did so she fell backwards onto the bed and took in a few deep breaths. “Unbelievable” she almost hissed through her teeth. She wasn’t one for prayer but she decided now might be the time to talk to the big guy. She made a short prayer in her heart. Lord help me to find things in this strange city I know nothing about I just want to feel complete. Unknowingly she fell asleep against the rough sheets with even her boots still on. She had not yet noticed how tired the trip had made her.

The hotel room became dark and a creaking could be heard, as the door to the hotel room was opening. Ryann turned around on the bed and saw things a bit fuzzy. All she was able to see was a dark form with something shiny in the person’s hand. “Oh … no! Get away!” She shouted. However, her voice was low and the more she thought she was yelling the lower her voice became. No one could hear her or save her it was all going to be over right here and right this minute. Her dreams shattered in a single instant. She pushed herself closer and closer to the edge of the bed and fell off with tears were beginning to fall out of her eyes like rain drops as the dark form got closer.  She fell with a thump and woke up.
