The One to Change it All

The walk to the tutoring building is like knowing the back of my hand. My tutor, Zach, is two years my senior and we’ve known each other for the last 5 years. As much as I would love to say that we are close, we’re not. We’ve never shared a secret, had a mutual friend, and most of all, we’ve never shared a common thought on any matter. Zach seems strange, but I cant place whats different about him. 

As I take a seat at the square, frosted, white glass table, he sets a cup of steaming tea infront of me while I open my books. I look up to see his innocent looking face, those tired looking brown eyes, staring at me with a certain type of intensity. He looks down to my books with a small, forced smile and starts the lesson. I wait for him to start, but he doesn’t. His smile slowly turns to a slight frown and his brow furrows. 

“Evelyn...” He trails off and it almost pains me to see his distress. “Have you ever thought that somethings-”. He doesn’t finish his sentence and slowly opens up my books and starts the lesson. 

I laugh nervously and try to coax him into telling me whats on his mind. “Zach, we both know you have something to say. Spit it out.” 

His eyes slowly search the page, almost like he’s reading something. I try to calm my temper as the minutes go by, and he’s highlighting sections on the page. Slowly he turns the book to face me, and I see single letters of each paragraph have been highlighted. He starts to talk about some writer from centuries ago, but my mind is putting together the words. One...Way... Glass. At first the words make no sense to me, until I see his eyes flicker quickly to the wall and he goes on talking, in a strange, strained voice that I’ve never heard him speak in before. It looks as if a new mirror has been put up until my mind recognizes what he’s trying to say. Someone is watching us.
