This is a poem I wrote the other day for my creative writing class. Enjoy.

False Perfection

Stand in front of the mirror

Not too close

Reach out with your right hand and touch the glass

It’s cool and smooth

Close your eyes

You can see without them

Envision the mirror changing shape

Any shape

Keep your eyes closed and reach

Reach for the warmth you can almost feel on your skin

Reach for the perfection on the other side

Reach until you step through the rippling frame of the mirror

You have entered the mirror

You are in the mirror

An alternative reality

At your feet are glass cobblestones

They form a path to lead you through the mirror

Follow them

Don’t step on any cracks

You will slip through them

Don’t leave the path

You won’t like what you find

Look to your left

The birds are loud and their sounds lull you into a tentative calm

Look to the right

The grass is as green as the crayons you used as a child

Your eyes close as you feel and listen to this magical world

But don’t be fooled

That’s the mirrors goal

You start to forget what you’re doing there

You forget you’re hiding

Hiding from the world you came from

A getaway

An escape

You keep your eyes closed and start to walk

You walk to the end of the pathway

The cobblestones end

A slate path takes its place

You don’t notice

You’re wrapped up in the shallow perfection

With your eyes closed you don’t see the path turning

You step off the path

Your eyes spring open as the world starts to tilt

You are falling

Falling down in the dark

A dark that is only seen by the select few who live in the shadows

Wind rushes past as you fall

You close your eyes once more and wish for the warmth of the mirror

With your eyes closed you don’t see the ground rush up to meet you

You land in a tangle of limbs

You open your eyes to see the grass once more

You see the trees with the birds

But the birds aren’t singing

They are staring

At what

You can’t figure out

You are pondering

Thinking about the silence and the cold you feel here

Here where you once felt warmth and calm you now feel the touch of terror and fear

You look up to the sky

Something hits your face

A splatter

You touch your face and bring your hand back

It came back blue

The sky is melting

You look around and see the mirror world melt away

Leaving a grey existence

The birds screech

Gone are there calming melodies

The grass has turned sharp

You get up and run

Run down the glass pathway

Leaving shattered footprints behind

Past the leave-less trees

You run

The pathway ends at a mirror

The mirror to the world you tried to escape

The world you hid from

A world you want to go back to

A world you can no longer enter

You stepped off the path

And now you can’t go back.
