In this story, Bella is the vampire who can read minds, and Edward is the human. Edward is watching Bella try to kill a vampire for the first time.
Bella:
I crept down my school's passageway, no sound emitting from my silent footsteps. No one could possibly be watching me... could they? The cameras would not work on me, no one would know what I had done. Or rather, what I had to do. And yet, I felt an uneasy trepidation. Somewhere, among these school halls, a killer, one of our accursed kind was waiting. For me. I had to keep my element of surprise. He must not see me. Esme... I would avenge her death. It was my duty. Warily, I cocked my head to the side. I could hear a pounding heart...
Edward:
I sank down quietly, resting at the back of the pillar I was behind. The marble felt cool to my sweating palms. Bella... For one moment, she looked straight at me. My heart skipped a beat then. Her footsteps hardly made a sound... Like a ghost, she seemed to float. I peeped out. Now she has her head to one side. I mused. Can she hear me? Can she hear my thundering heart?
Bella:
I knew that I was being ridiculous. Who could escape my senses? Even if someone did this time, it would have to be a human. Vampires don't have heartbeats... I wasn't sure, though. Filled with uneasy trepidation, I scanned the thoughts around me. I heard none but my own and the nomad's curses within fifty metres. I felt satisfaction at that. He was in the library, in the east wing. Even if he heard, he had twenty yards of stone and wood between us. Not enough to stop him, but hopefully, deter him. I was safe for now... and yet, that distinctive beating...
Edward:
I breathed heavily. Bella... she was wondrous, amazing, surreal. She was, no doubt, beautiful. And yet, a strange kind of beautiful. Eerie, frightening, even. Unnatural.
Bella:
Yes. I was being silly. I knew that on normal occasions, I would dismiss this. This was hardly a normal occasion. Cautiously, I sniffed at the air. I froze. A feral hunger came over me. A delicious, bitter sweet aroma filled the air. Somewhat floral... My eyes, a fiery red spun around, finding the precise spot on which I knew the puny human stood. I would rip him apart. No one would miss him; he was as good as dead anyway. I couldn't think, I couldn't speak coherently, and I didn't want to. All of my being was attracted to that tantalising scent. I started to walk forward. One tiny, rational part of me cried out, urging me to stop. I wrestled with myself, each part as determined as the other. Finally, that part was exhausted, and somewhat deliriously, I charged towards the spot my delicious morsel stood.
Edward:
Why does she cock her head so? Now she is sniffing at nothing. Suddenly, her body froze, as still as a statue. Somehow, I knew she knew I was here. But impossible! A sense of dread overcame me. She glared at me, hatred twisting her features. She took a couple of quick steps towards me, but then stopped. She didn't look very beautiful anymore. Suddenly, she moved. Faster than the speed a race car goes around the bend, faster than sound, faster than lightening, faster than anything earthbound. She moved. One moment, she was more than a yard from me, and the next, she was standing right in front of the pillar behind which I hid. Impossible... How? Cold sweat trickled down my back.
Bella:
"Come to me." I called. "I know you are there." He came instantly. How could he not? No one could resist me. Then, I saw him properly. Immediately, my heart started beating furiously. In figurative sense, of course. I didn't know why. There was something about him though, something alluring... Mystical, enchanting. I felt a pang I had not felt in fifty years. Something deep, warm, tender... His face, slightly scared, had sharp features. He had bright emerald eyes, straight, pointed nose, yet a rather tender mouth... Mmm, perfect. My mouth watered, and I made the mistake of breathing a small breath in through my nose. I gasped. The sharp knives that seemed to be sticking at the back of my throat made my hunger unbearable. I started to gulp frantically, I needed the blood. No! I must regain control...
Edward:
She called for me. I came. What else could I do? Her voice was soft, sensual, appealing. I saw a moment of surprise flicker across her face as she looked at me. Why? I wasn't anyone compared to her. My whole body was filled with desire. I peeked a look at her face. Her features were softer now, and her eyes were lighter shade of red. Suddenly, her eyes darkened again, and they narrowed. Her expression hardened again. I was afraid, and somehow sad, too. Afraid, for she was frightening. Sad, because I had thought, for one moment... no! What was I thinking?
