Ari POV
"Dad, where'd Mom put the laundry basket?" I called, searching the house effortlessly for it.
"I dunno. I don't pay attention to that kind of stuff..." he shouted back, trailing off.
I rolled my eyes and went into my parent's room. I found the laundry basket sitting on their bed, a pile of dirty clothes next to it.
I sighed. "You know, Dad, you could have put your clothes in the basket instead of next to it," I said, not getting a reply.
I started putting the dirty clothes into the basket, then took the basket to the laundry room. After I started the wash, I went into my room and lied on my bed, closing my eyes and listening to my iPod. Then I fell into a deep sleep..
Dawson POV
I walked to Ari's house; we were supposed to work on Algebra homework together tonight. I saw her mom and dad outside, staring at the house in shock. There was also a fire truck there.
Oh, no, I thought. Ari!
I ran towards her family. Her dad looked at me, his face filled with sadness and worry.
"Mr. Tanner?" I said. "Where's Ari?"
He just looked at the house; I did too. A few windows had smoke pouring through them, and flames nipping at the air outside. The firemen got their hoses ready, but I didn't want to wait that long.
"Where's Ari?" I repeated louder, more of a demand now.
"She's still in the house, trapped in her room. I tried everything I could..." he trailed off.
I ran towards the house, ignoring the protests from the other people outside.
The stairs were filled with smoke as I ran up them, coughing as I did. It was extremely hot in there.
"Ari?!" I shouted, still coughing. Smoke filled my lungs, making it difficult for me to breathe. I didn't care, though.
"Ari!" I tried again, still not getting a response.
I ran to her room; the doorknob was hot. I flung open the door, smoke flying into my face.
"Ari!"
I heard shockingly weak coughing. Ari.
I ran towards the sound, then collapsed on the floor. I felt around for Ari, finally finding her hand and grabbing it. I saw her face through the thick smoke.
"Ari, can you hear me?" I asked. She nodded slowly.
I picked her up, surprised at how light she was. I ran out of the house with Ari in my arms, EMT's running towards me. They took Ari out of my arms, running her to a gurney. I tried to go in the ambulance after her, but a guy stopped me.
"You can't go in there," he told me.
"Please, let me go with her. She's my best friend," I whispered.
He sighed and let me in. We drove to the hospital.
...TIME SKIP.....
I sat on the chair in Ari's hospital room next to her bed, holding her hand and waiting for her to wake up.
Her head moved, and her eyes opened slowly. She blinked up at me.
"Dawson?" she asked, her voice hoarse.
"Yeah," I said, stroking her cheek. "It's me."
"Where am I?" Ari asked.
"The hospital," I replied. "You got burnt pretty bad on your side."
