"Freshman at last!" Irish said, smiling wide and looking for her room DHS 106 at Dickinson High School.
"Just eight more years and I'll graduate, get a job, make money, marry my one true love, then.....I die! Oh wait, of course I wouldn’t forget God." she gasped dramatically, while frantically skipping towards her room's door.
Then, she suddenly grew nervous. She nearly forgot that she's now entering a new chapter in her life with new faces to befriend. Irish somehow did not like that brand new idea. She longed for her former classmates back from her elementary years. She feared rejection.
“Hi classmates! I’m Irish Jane Findley and I’m…” Irish faltered. She thought of herself being such a weird desperate girl practicing on how to introduce herself while at the corridors.
“Oh no.” She groaned and palmed her forehead. “What if nobody will like me there?” It seemed for Irish that making new friends was as hard as basic math problems, and that saying her name was such a foreign thing that she could not master.
Irish continued walking and saw her room at last – DHS 106. She closed her eyes and took a deep breath while she held the doorknob, ready to turn it.
Bunch of students spread before her. She smiled upon seeing her new room. It was her first time to stay in a classroom with an air conditioner. “Wow! Two air conditioners? How amazing is that?” Irish bet her allergic rhinitis was going to grow worse. The room was over-cooled with a pair of air conditioners on both in front and back, while two ceiling fans were set in swing mode above. “And no hanky. Lucky girl, Irish.”
Casement windows on the left were adorned with green-ruffled silk curtains. On the right side rested shelves and cabinets. A fixed platform was cemented beneath the front board, while attached on the backboard are the assignment, tardy and absentee corners, and name plates.
Irish stood in front of a somewhat divided class. Noise here, silence there. Perhaps those chatty people were sort of BFF's, while those silent types were like, "Hello? We're just new here. Can someone even see us? Don't cast us out! We're dying of boredom!" Irish stared at her new classmates while walking towards a vacant seat.
She sat and began setting impressions on anyone she glanced at. There was a boy, small and dark-skinned, who was already in school uniform. Irish decided he was a nerd, though well-mannered. Suddenly, she noticed a glamorous girl wearing a fashionable black outfit accompanied by a fancy hat.
"Maybe we won’t get along too well," She thought.
Irish turned to see who was seated beside her, and thankfully saw a familiar face. The girl was wearing a plain white sando, with an unbuttoned polo shirt on top. She had her black skinny jeans belted, and paired with red sneakers. Her short black hair was clipped back with a purple ribbon. It was Rachel O’Lair, the girl she’d met the day Irish took the entrance exam. They had become good friends, and now, to her surprise, they were classmates!
“Rachel? It’s you right?” Irish’s silence broke.
Rachel immediately recognized her and said, “Oh my! Irish? I can’t believe we’ll be staying in one room!”
Irish couldn’t hide her happiness that at last, she won’t just sit there and spend time staring. She and Rachel started chatting and giggling just like some others were doing.
“Lord, this is awesome!” Irish spoke in mind. Her anxiety of being rejected finally left her.
In the corner of the room, Irish saw Von, quietly seated. He’s been her classmate for 6 years now, and Irish had gotten to know his moody attitude, so she didn’t bother talking to him. Sometimes he could be weird, but most of the time, he’s cheery. Back then, Irish could rescue him from everyone or bully him like everyone. They would even laugh their heads off when they were together. But Irish would never forget the fact that Von had hurt many of their classmates when they were younger. Von has imposed a negative impression on many of them, including her.
